Earlier the sun sinks below the horizon leaving its soft glow
of orange-whipped clouds dotting the beautiful expanse of blue.
Earlier deep black of sky shines bright with brilliant stars
winking their peaceful goodnights as north winds enter on cue.

Barren-armed elms, swaying in the breeze, tuck close their limbs
and branches of the mighty oak curl brittle their leaves
before unattaching in gentle dive to ground in stately mounds;
preparing for next year's new garment of green-budded sleeves.

Scurrying to and fro are the busy, bush-tailed squirrels
comically frantic in their search for feasts of walnut and acorn.
Geese form their magnificent Vees in familiar flocking to warmth
as the gentle dove builds furred nesting in the dew-licked chill of morn.

A quietness lies o'er the browning meadow like a comfortable quilt,
preparing for long slumber as the first flurry of snowflakes fall.
Resting in peaceful interlude are the waters gently streaming
below fine sheen of icy shield, patient for its warming call.

When you think you have heard it all,
listen more closely.

Very nice,
Toss another feather boa on
and keep the chill down,
“below fine sheen of icy shield,” won’t be long,
before sky white covers the ground.

as time winds itself
losing interest by Fall
there are breathing moments
for peace and slower life

Doreen, how is the Petite bird of Penn?
well structured, beautifully metaphoric
leaves a reader, comforted
and euphoric

Hello Jeff-- This bird of Penn is anxious for the cooooooolness and color of Autumn. Thank you, not only for responding but, for a lovely poetic one in spiraling leaf shape form. You are a clever one! *s

Noah-- big hugs returned fondly and thank YOU for your enthusiasm! *s
