Into the night of fright and gloom afore the gate of crypt and tomb
on steps of quiet and dread aplomb my search does bring a quake to be
For was one step that woke the dead who now before me softly tread
and wish I might have been instead some place alive and spright to flee

With grin of stark and teeth amiss where once upon was placed a kiss
and voice is naught but rancid hiss from tongueless face of nevermore.
Sockets of the eyes stare grimly out into the distance glimly
glaring in to the night dimly where sight does bring to eyes the gore

The tomb so dank and full of bones among the rubble and the stones
where only the door creaks and groans against the cold winds a howling.
Into the waiting cart I dive in hopes of leaving there alive
Yelling at the horseman to drive with my heart in throat a thumping

We sped so fast into the night away from all the ghouls and fright
till suddenly we stopped outright as the driver started shrieking
For up ahead beneath the moon a shadow cast against the gloom
a headless rider tall did loom from out of the darkness laughing

Familiar to the eyes of me this rider of my destiny
did point the way for us to flee into the gray of mist before
Without a sound between us heard we fled away with chilling stirred
past a dark feathered grinning bird on the signpost to Nevermore.....

Magus darling boy, this is outstanding writing you have me shaking in my shoes darling heart. Art thou fair, art thou sociable, now art thou ashamed to leave me so? Of course you’re not for this is utterly utterly perfect writing. I swear darling boy that you get better and better. And Oh how I love it when you write like this, purely poetic perfection wrapped in the bone chilling scare you give me. I think I owe you for a fright night darling heart, just keep your eyes pealed For you never know what may be coming  up behind you

Wonderful absolutely wonderful writing I love it utterly utterly but you still deserve something for making me shiver
Love and warm stuff
As always
Mushy

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and they balm
Let sense be dumb let flesh retire
Speak through the eathquake wind and fire
Oh

Lil Tai....thank you...I enjoy this type of
poem, particularly the rhyme of it...so
reminding of a poem by Poe...

Yes M'lady,  I shall be nigh
to comfort, hold, quell thy cry
Thy rest thy need for day's break
whence mine arms do thee take

Thine art the flower in bloom
with petals soft to the touch
My heart thee hold in thy room
in wait of my kiss, and such.

Barry, this is awesome work! I think it's by far the best I've seen from you. You took a difficult rhyme scheme and made it flow expertly. Well Done!!!!

if I may rain on your parade, though, try to change the rhyming words in the last two lines of the second stanza. The only reason I bring it up is that this is such a good poem. All of the other lines are great....don't let those two diminish the brilliance.

Michael....I guess that you are pointing to
darkly and before?

Now I have to figure out what two words
fit and blend in...Any suggestions...???

Believe me,  I accept this all as a very
serious compliment....

I was going to say shades of Poe. But someone always says it first.
Awesome poem, any way you describe it.
