What if any of us die?
While striving in joy.
Withering in frustration
toiling to employ.

What a waste is death.
The end of all improvements.
The doom of doing better.
Sesation of all movements.

What a little while we have.
We're short and bloody quick.
Without a bit of hope,
What paths would we then pick.

What if we die?
Should this be our concern?
What sort of compensation,
for good living should we earn?

What if we die young?
Before we have the chance
to learn the bitter lessons
that experience advance.

Is God such a joker?
Does he leave us in the lurch?
Keep us never knowing.
For what this gift of birth?

I don't think it's possible.
For one so big to think,
mean and little tricksters.
To leave us on the brink.

God must have a purpose.
We can't have just appeared.
No matter how I fight it.
Thats' the answer that I feared.

What happens when we die.
I'm sure God only knows.
Though if we want the answer
From his word is where it flows.

Thanks for writing this for me, Woodtic...
I think that God knows the answers and anyone who has already died, also knows them...except they can't really come back and tell us.
But I think thats probably the way it is designed to be, because if we knew the answers while we still were alive, it might just influence us to want to die before our time.
My late first husband died 3 yrs ago, and I know that I have had lots of communication from him.  I have recognized his touching me and there has been absolutely no doubt about that because he has spoken to me...though not in words, but in ways that only those who have been married for many years can understand.  So, I know that his soul is somewhere where he can watch over me, although I cannot see him...but I do feel his presence and I know that he watches over me and guides me.
Again...thanks for this lovely poem and thanks for sharing it with all of us.
~ big big hugs

what happens when we die?

who knows? does it matter?  given that we don't know what actually happens, doubt and fear could haunt you ... but like you said, having faith that god has a purpose is hopeful.  maybe the reason we live is to create meaning with the life that we're given; using all the beautiful things we have NOW.  life is one giant experience. i don't believe death is the end of that experience, or process.  your poem represents worry that a lot of people feel, which truly is unncecessary.  i mean, worry doesn't help!  it hinders.  how can you live life in the form that you were born joyously into when you're preoccupied with worrisome thoughts about the form you will become? i can understand this very real concern, but i think it lacks wisdom.  every single life is so grand, full of purpose, that there is no way that its only a fleeting celestial wink; a life of procreation, amassing of wealth, winning, whatever.  there's a soul at work here.  right now, despite so-called worthless existences.  so, maybe the questioning of "death" is really a questioning of life itself.  what is life?

sorry to have a written so much, but you really got me thinking!  thank you!
