~The Red Badge of Womanhood~

Marking the passing seasons of her life
each month it flows red
the badge of womanhood
uniting her with all womankind
across boundaries of religion and race
wealth and status

it's arrival in her springtime
heralds her blossoming adulthood
fertility, newly realized

in her prime, a signature of ripeness
bearing the burden of her precious fruit
and nurturing instincts

at maturity, it's very disappearence
marks the end of her salad days
no longer the lithesome vixen is she
but more beautiful than ever
seasoned by life's raging storms
weathered to perfection
she radiates wisdom and grace

though the red flow has ceased
she still proudly wears
the badge of womanhood
now burnished to a brilliant sheen
by the passing seasons of her life
~

You keep your promises very well, and I do remember this.  Because one reading led to another reading, I have come to admire you for the courage and fortitude you show not only as a woman, but as a poet who knows how to express herself in such ways as to bring us to tears, and to laughter...you have the talent, my dear...and you wield it well.  Thank you for this...thank you for you!

Red Badge of Courage Hugs....

And we shall meet, wearing purple!

Lyra, this was incredible writing about being a woman. Have you ever read the book, The Red Tent? I thought it was fabulous and you might want to take it out of the library when you get a chance. I've read it several times.

Hugs, Marti

Thanks so much, Karilea...
What a wonderful compliment which means even more to me from a poet with your incredible talent.
And we will definitely wear purple together one day...
but not just yet.
We have a lot more red and green years before the purple...
but the purple are the most valuable

Thanks so much, Martie...
I think you are much too young to be wearing purple, though.
My late mother in law loved purple so much that almost all of her clothes were purple, as was her luggage and almost everything else she owned.
I think she had at least a dozen purple nightgowns and probably a few dozen purple earrings.  She had these things when I first met her and I think she was only 55 then.
She was probably born wearing purple.

Thanks so much, Marti...
Its good to see you back here again.
I have never seen that book, but I will look for it.  Is it about a woman who got so fat that she had to wear tents?
Lately, I haven't had time to read anything because I spend so much time here at Piptalk and also researching different treatments.
~ red hugs

Thanks so much, Noah...
I think I like my life much better as a middle aged person than I did when I was younger...
thats basically what the poem is about.

Michael...thanks so much for your reply.
I guess I am going through my red period right now
But red has always been my favorite color...
For some reason, it makes me feel more comfortable and it looks good on me...
