Set Free

I'm out.
I want to scream.
I want to shout.
I'm really out.
Four long years
I lived to please
Uncle Sam.
Now that I'm out
of the Army
I can follow
my own plan.
It's off to college
for me.
No more tanks
or infantry.
No more reveille
bugging me.
No more GI beans
and gravy.
Take me home
pretty baby.
Four years that
weren't really mine.
Four years subtracted
from a lifetime.
Now I'm
freakin' out.
Freedom is what
its all about.
And it feels
good to me.
Kind of
heavenly
to finally
be set free.

Wrote this for my son Jeremiah who finally got out of the Army on June 27, 2002.  His youngest brother flew to Texas and then they both drove home to California...a two day drive...he starts college at the Art Institute in Santa Ana later this month...

I've heard them yelling "Short!" in a triumphant tone, so I know what this one is about. I'm glad he has a plan, and isn't just going to drift. Good poem.

What a great feeling this must be!!!  Congratulations to your son!  I have a son in the army too... he's been to Kosovo and Bosnia... so I can imagine how it will be like when he will be "free" too!

Thank you Nakdthoughts, Nan, devina, Lyra and Neeraja...
Yes after a while you start feeling like you have been in forever...so it is a pleasure when the time starts approaching to get out...of course some reenlist and stay in for 20 years or so.
Unfortunately I haven't seen him yet because he now lives in California and I live in Hawaii...but I usually go back to visit in December.
Neeraja I am glad your son made it back safely from Kosovo and Bosnia...
My son served in Germany and Albania and Texas the time he was in...I was very nervous for his safety when he was in Albania...James
