Ani refers to Ani Difranco, my favorite singer. Her lyrics are pretty much poetry put to music, she's amazing. Two Little Girls, You Had Time, Overlap, Both Hands, and Willing To Fight are all Ani songs. Living In Clip is one of her cd's.*

I was listening to Ani
sing about Two Little Girls
and I thought about you,
but of course I would,
you'd understand
if you heard the song.
I remember seeing you there
in front of your
double-mirror closet doors
watching me,
watch you
stick that needle in your vein
and when it went in
a tear came out of my eye
and I left the room
because I dont wanna see you
do that to yourself,
which reminded me of
that day you wiped my tears away
with your thumb
and told me it would all be ok
if I just gave you some time
which reminded me of
listening to Ani sing
You Had Time
and I wonder if maybe
she knows us through ESP
or if shes just been through this before.

And then Overlap came on
and I remembered seeing you
in front of your window
with a lost look on your face
and I just stared at you for
half an hour wishing I knew
what you were thinking
so maybe I could smooth out
that line on your forehead
that told me you were worried or scared
and thinking back on it
I should've said something
so you would've known I was there
but you make me stop functioning
sometimes when you're not holding up that wall.
Which triggers a memory of you
laughing carelessly at some stupid thing I did,
I think I tripped and played it off, but apparently not well
but I didn't care because I made you laugh
and I'd give anything to see that again.

And if you'd let me, I'd sing Ani to you off-key
or maybe just let her sing it
and tell you that its from me
Because she reminds me of you
and you remind me of us
and we're just something
that I can't let go of
so I'll put on Living In Clip
and use Both Hands to hold you tight
and we'll drift off listening to her sing
about being Willing to Fight.
