Listening to every heart

The Story of Hattie Mae Wiatt

She brought herself alone to church, a Sunday morning bright
The building was so very small, no room to pray in sight
As tickets of admission sold out weeks far in advance
The little girl in ragged clothes did not stand a chance

The minister, he came outside and saw her standing there
Then down he bent and lifted her straight up into the air
Upon his shoulders she was placed, his head her arms embraced
Then inside the church they went, and sat talking face to face

The minister explained to her, she’d someday see more room
For all the children still outside, and light would lift the gloom
His plans were large just as she was small, still he would believe
That somehow in his God’s great plans, those prayers would be received

So they talked awhile, Hattie listened to the minister
She agreed, more room was needed, of that she was so sure
The man then smiled, for he had shared his lonely heart’s desire
And little did he really know the thoughts he had inspired.

Weeks went by, then the man was called to pray by Hattie’s side
For she was sick with fever, in God’s love she would abide
The minister then left her, saddened at the thought of death
Hattie died the very next day, few worldly assets left.

Hattie’s ma addressed the pastor, presented Hattie’s purse
All the gifts she could leave him, her possessions of this earth
Fifty-seven cents now lay in the palm of his one hand
“Hattie said you will need all this to build your church so grand!”

The pastor he then took the gift and told the members all
A little girl believes in us, I would not have us fall,
From her hopes a church to build, by fifty-seven pennies
Then he sold them one by one, so much came from so many.

Upon faith of one small child, to build God a greater home
In our hearts we should be blessed a legacy by poem.

And - this is why I am so proud to say that I know you know because soon one day I can say "I knew her when!"

There is nothing means more to me than
my faith, my family and my friends.

It's a lovely tale of how inspiration, born in one heart, can change the world.  Thank you. KJ

Kari,
thank you for reminding me that it is the seeds we sow that grow and grow.
