April 22, 2002Earth Day

Sometimes, the Natives win.

Today I honor those who fight
to preserve our Earth's environment,
to do what is right.

Three Gwich'ins of the frozen north
stood their ground,
brought the true facts forth.

Now ANWR drilling is off the book
(at least for now)
and the caribou are off the Oilman's hook.

Jonathan Solomon
Sarah James
Norma Kassi

Today I honor you,
for your tenacity and bravery.
Forever I will thank you.

To honor the three Gwich'ins, whose efforts to protect the fragile Arctic and Canadian ecosystems paid off, in preventing the drilling for oil, at least temporarily, in the calving grounds of the porcupine caribou herd. And who knows how many living things have been saved, in the long run?

Here, here,

Nice dedication,

And if there is no helping then there is no preventing the inevitable. Let's do our part!

The world is said to be a better place ...
a tribute well worth each word and many more.
A feel of warmth shines from the frozen north ..., must be your smile!

Midnitesun,

Nice job.  Thanks for sharing.  I'm never up on the news but thanks for informing me!  Whenever I have some spare money, donating to environmental causes will probably be high on the list.  And, by the way, wow, are you another Native person?  I just met Marge here today.  I'm part Mohawk.  You?

Thank you for reminding me, the jaded one, that PEOPLE CAN AND DO make a difference.

This is inspiring, enchanting one!

(see, YOU made a difference just by posting this! )

Simply wonderful.

Thanks for this tribute, K.  And thanks to all who fought the fight.
I must tell you, however, that in my ever deepening environmental cynicism, I see this as a successful "red herring" on the part of the administration.  And it will now be used to beat up on anyone conjoined in the next battle.  I believe that the administration expected to lose this one.  They have successfully bled the opposition.

Thank you all for reading and for your replies. This battle surely isn't over yet, probably just delayed a bit, but I noticed today there is a renewed focus on ethanol, and perhaps we will yet find some less ( or even non) destructive way to feed our greedy appetites.

Krawdad, you are probably closer to the truth than I care to admit, but we can't afford to simply lie down and rest. When the lines get long at the stations, and the price goes up, many people will still say DRILL, no matter what the cost.

Craig, so nice to have a visit from you. Thanks for the smiling reply.

Pearls, no, I am a mixed breed of at least 5 different ethnic lines, but the only Native claim is I am a native Californian, and a native of the planet Earth. I like to think of myself simply as a world citizen, belonging to none, yet part of everyone.

Noah, they really are dynamic survivors, and fighting to preserve a way of life few people can understand.

Serenity, yes, we can make a difference. A crowd or group is just a collection of a lot of individuals, only with more clout.

Lauren, thanks, you always seem to be standing with me on these basics. Peace.

Seymour, thanks. I appreciate your reply very much.

Kacy your style of informative writing lately is wonderful and this piece is a fine tribute.  I am inclined to agree with Krawdad on this issue, and I like your presentation enabling us all to discuss these issues.  Well done girlie-poet
