illuminated by battery light
sleep-addled thoughts come to the fore
thoughts once lost to the darkness
now come and buzz around that light
              like the proverbial moth
except, these thoughts rarely burn their wings

they are born of desires yet to be
of times and places still not known
       except in that darkness
waiting to be examined and revealed
to eyes that can now see better asleep
and to a mind no longer awake to limits

they appear in solid silhouette
cutouts against the sky of life and light
formed and waiting to be held by hands
              made of dust and dreams
hands that have held yesterday and today
while leaving tomorrow still on the shelf

they are the beings of that part of us
that we deny existence to
they have not names or faces or bodies
save the ones that we know them to have
in these moments when we know them
when we know ourselves, when they know us as ourselves
       in that darkness of thought
              that emptiness of being

we do not remember them when the light
returns to the mind's eye
       lest we become shadowlost
              lost between dreams and sleep
                     between darkness and light
a place where colors remain in the mind
and the mind remains lost without them

again, waking thoughts return to us
and we put away the shadowlife
       of our sleep-addled thoughts
until the next new moon
when again, the shadows of our minds
              come out again to play
and our darkness becomes our light

WOW Sven!  This is an eye-opener.
Most certainly one I am going to keep
and ponder later...
deep thoughts here
which simply cannot be ignored.
Wonderful write.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire poem, Sven... but I like these lines especially. *S* They remind me so much of olden days when I competed in literary rallies... so many answers came to me in the middle of the night... long past time to help my scores. LOL

This is one I shall enjoy thinking about. *S* Well done!

I like all of this, I am one who tries to hold onto the sleep thoughts, and has been known to leap out of bed in the middle of the night to write something down.
Well done.

BRAVO!!! Oh my gosh, I just love the imagery in this, the hands, the moth, and collected feelings that you associate so wonderfully in your words! (big hugggssssss) May we all find peace on both sides of the contradictions and find lifes secrets within, sweet friend, this is excellent! We all love you so much, sweet friend, this is very provoking! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet John, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
