Holding Love’s Ladder

Now I’m not a man of good looks one might say
An occasional dog have I frightened away
Nor have I been blessed with unusual wit
You might call me dull, and I’m sure of it
But still there are women who must’ve found worse
‘Cause I’m often in love, although it’s a curse

Of short-lived affairs, my life’s been a parade
Although I’ve loved many, not one has stayed
And each time I’m told that they’ve found someone better
(That’s not the best news to receive in a letter)
They say they’ve all found the young man of their dreams
Though they’d like to remain friends of mine, so it seems

And that leaves me to ponder my sad little plight
Will I ever be anyone’s real Mr. Right
Am I just a step in the stairway of love
A person whom no one will ever dream of

But thinking that way, well it just makes me sadder
I guess you could say that I’m holding love’s ladder
I’ve just helped another one find Mr. Right
And I’ll still be her friend . . . but just not tonight

I really liked this - the man's point of view in the world of "hopeful romance." Well done. Chris

"Hope" is the thing with feathers-
that perches in the soul....

Hey!!! You're the man of MY dreams!!

It's nice to see you here. And if you're that ladder, please don't look up - never know what you'll see.

Yeah, Fred, I don't know you, but I sure do like this poem. Besides being written so well, it sounds like I would imagine that a lot of men feel. I, myself, have had some really good men friends in my life....ones I loved as friends only.

I'll check back to see if you submitted it for the book......
