I slept on the couch again
After a dinner of stew and cracker
A few beers and a lot of silence
From Lacey.

Morning found me up
And coffee made as I watched
The valley floor turn from a sea of black
To shades of paler grey
And finally green.

Lacey staggered in about 7am
And I poured her a cup.
“Eggs?” I asked

“Sure” she said.
“ I talked to Donnie yesterday while I was in toan.”
She continued, “He was driving over with a friend
To pick up my car where we left it.”
“He should be here this morning.”

“Good” I replied as I scrambled eggs
and added salt.

“Look, Lacey” I blurted out
“I’m leaving after we eat and will be gone
at least a few days.”

My stomach tight I continued,
“You need some time to think it seems and
Davis needs an answer to what ever it was
He wanted to know.”

“Just be better if I wasn’t here it seems.”

She looked at me, then looked away
And out the window at the meadow.

“Will you come back someday or will I be another ghost?”
she asked without looking at me.

“ Lacey, neither of us need something else to haunt us.”
I heard myself saying and not knowing where
It came from.

“I’ll be back “
……………………………

Joplin was behind me and I-44 west
Lay strung out on Oklahoma
Like a string dropped on an ant farm.
When I finally breathed.

Missing already the easy warmth of being called ugly.
…………………………………………….

It has been a long time since I truly felt this way
Wondering why the leaving made me want to stay
The times that I had with you seem to quickly fade
But living isn’t easy with the choices that we’ve made

…………………………….

I found her phone number when I stopped in Tulsa
And called

after 9 rings I hung up

and wondered if I'd find the right words back

So the question remains, does she care?

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Ron, this is wonderful, sweet friend, I just love this poem was almost like a variety of poems in one, like the beginning a soap opera-like conversation, the road like a stream of consciousness, and the end an abrupt and somewhat painful realization! (sigh) This is marvelous, sweet friend, they just can't become ghosts, no way, no how, I love this, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ron, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

This is good, but I think I've missed something while I wasn't on here today. I've gotta go look....:
