Cowards Like Me

When I was very little
I heard Jesus say
“Follow Me.”
Then in high school I heard
it again from Buddha
and Mahatma Gandhi.
Baha’ullah and Krishna,
even Muhammed
visited me,
each speaking softly
to my searching soul
and deepest psyche.
And not one held a gun
to my head as
they all protested
and called for changes
to our inhumanity.

And they all spoke of similar things,
such as injustice and cruelty,
and each one did reveal a truth...
there is a greater power
than me.
To my knowledge,
none ever espoused
the belief that war
was God's solution
to violence and injustice.
Instead I heard
words such as:

Namaste;
Peace;
Vengeance is mine,
saith the LORD;
Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.
Thou shalt not kill.

(though on this last point
some shall say not
not all did agree)

And through all these voices
I heard the word
of the God
I know today.
Yes,
I am a coward.
And I think
I'll remain
in this
company.

I think they are all the same God.What does God care if you call him Allah,Jehova,Yaweh,or Buhdda?
And as to the many scriptures? Only words written by man about thier Gods, not words Written by God for them.(or so I think)
Nice piece, thought provoking. My personal thoughts are that God is bigger than one person, one sect, one race. And I think that he is disapointed in our shallow divisions.

groovy,
dont particularly believe in the big man,
believe in something greater than him,
where we all stem from, without division of religion, race, etc.

Exactly, Jason. It matters not what name you use. What matters most to me is that we accept that MANKIND is NOT the master of the universe. Many people believe there is no master, and they have the same rights as those of us who hold onto some kind of belief system.

Duncan, morning hugs to you, thanks for spending some time with me this morning.

Eric? thank you for your reply. Peace to you, today and always.

inked? I'm not sure if he even exists. Maybe a  she?  No, hopefully IT is not a sexist entity.

Kacy,
I must say that the impending war on Iraq has made you churn out some of your best poetry...sorry for all the anxieties you are feeling for your countrymen and for humanity but i dig this poem....i hope you will submit this for the book..of course, bigoted, prejudiced people will dismiss this aside but you may just reach out to some, who will take a moment to reflect on what may be a novel concept and perhaps alter the way they see things and treat people for the better

I love this for the thought you have put into it, for the courage you needed to voice out such views and for your concern of your fellow world citizens

An excellent portraial of some difference between religion and spirituality. If one of the benifits of poetry is enlightenment this write shines with that potential.Enjoyed Poetess...

Margherita, Dixie, Kaile, Ray, Majnu, Kethry

I thank each one of you for your kind replies. At first I wasn't sure about posting this one, as it was somewhat of a 'reactive' poem to having been indirectly labelled a 'coward' for protesting war, and for encouraging others to remain civil in their responses to different points of view.
I'm sure those who have called me coward have simply misinterpreted what I've said.
It is our duty as well as our right to protest when we believe our leaders are taking the wrong pathway.

I love reading your poetry. You are a big thinker with a big heart. You inform and delight! You shine light on social issues and you share the beauty of nature with us through your open and seeing eyes. "Coward" and "Midnitesun" do not belong in the same sentence, dear poetess!

Peace, Love, & Light,
Linda

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Kacy, this is so very true, sweet friend, we may all call this supernatural force by different names, this spirit greater than mankind, nevertheless we all believe in this spirit so we all share the same feelings in believing in this holy spirit and it angers me to see Bush and the other leaders of the world playing the spirit! (sad sigh) If only we can all realize that, this is powerful, I vote for this so this central truth can be reinstated, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sahring!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

well Kaile, if it doesn't? I'll prepare a special autographed copy just for you.
In fact, there is a chance I might be putting a poetry and art collage booklet together soon, with an anti-violence/anti-war theme. More on that later.

and at you too JM!

Kaile, I used to sketch and paint a lot, haven't done much in 15 years, but have a couple of projects in my brain that need to make it to the canvas.
