(In response to a recent CNN Article, of restaurants renaming French fries, "Freedom Fries" as a reaction to France not wishing to cooperate with war efforts! )

“Our countries are great friends. We have given you Lafayette and French fried potatoes”
O. Henry, Rolling Stones (1894) First reference to French fried potatoes.

Fast-Fried Freedom Fables

Little fry, who made Thee?
Who made Thee?
Who made Thee?
Little fry, who made Thee?
Who made Thee?
Who made Thee?

Where have you gone?
Where have you gone?

In the beginning it all used to be potatoes
Andean Incas had you for nearly three thousand years
You told time, treating injuries, and used for worship
Not to mention rip off the noses and lips from quote a few warriors
Never fried, stir-fried, the oil in subside
Lay them out in the sun, then stomp them open
The Conquistadors came and took you all away
Called you an “edible stone” for urgent provisions
Sir Francis Drake took you along to England
After conquering all the Spanish on the Caribbean
All the salt of the wounds as far as I am concerned
Could feed all the starving families from South Africa to the Mediterranean
He rested in Virginia to pick up some of his buddies
Soon enough it fell into the hands of some horticulturist
Wrote a paper and called them Virginia potatoes
When it never even made it there for 150 years, how queer

So please don’t give me fries with that
I’ve got to lay off all that fat
Freedom is a dish only served organic
But all this grease and cholesterol is making me sick
So please don’t give me fries with that
I’ve got to lay off all that fat
Freedom is a dish only served organic
But all this grease and cholesterol is making me sick

For so long, barely anyone ever wanted to eat you anyway
Until you fell into the hands of the Irish and Sir Walter Raleigh
You sprouted all along the Emerald Isles
Then Queen Elizabeth then had to spit you in the face
Holy-moly, the Scots found you unholy
Your existence in the Bible was zilch
How does belladonna fit in your family portrait
If your brother is poisonous filth?
Stephen Switzer called you a food fit for the Irish and clowns
For crying out loud, spread the word around
The Germans found you only suitable to prisoners
Wait until the famine comes, what’cha gonna do now?
Made all the innocent and poor do all the labor
Cut off the noses of all who were reluctant or overworked
Guess that’s the cost of the poison going through your system
Of all the blood and salt from tears and the painful slurs

So please don’t give me fries with that
I’ve got to lay off all that fat
Freedom is a dish only served organic
But all this grease and cholesterol is making me sick
So please don’t give me fries with that
I’ve got to lay off all that fat
Freedom is a dish only served organic
But all this grease and cholesterol is making me sick

Parmentier then came and took you to the French king
Throughout the aristocracy you became a delicacy
Legrand d'Aussy called you insipid, indigestible, pasty
Rejected from private households, ridiculously unhealthy
Peasants stole the crop, wake up, the world knows your name
Hey, look at that, Thomas Jefferson has it in your hand
Part of his heritage comes straight from France
Up to today, people still argue if the French or Belgians
Were the first to fry a potato in boiling fat
What a haunting fact
That the whole world can argue
Just about your acceptance and past
Yet McDonalds still seems to make you too greasy
Still seems to make you too limply
Still seems to make you too dark and burnt to eat
So I ain’t going to rest on a spatula’s laurels
When the fruits of nature are lying out there in the real bushes
Where the berries here are practically untouched
And the bald eagle waits like a stone, pushes
For a day when we’ll be free of this malnutrition
Forget the liberty steak and cabbage and take all our vitamins
You call these “freedom” fries, but I only feel more incarcerated…

So please don’t give me fries with that
I’ve got to lay off all that fat
Freedom is a dish only served organic
But all this grease and cholesterol is making me sick
So please don’t give me fries with that
I’ve got to lay off all that fat
Freedom is a dish only served organic
But all this grease and cholesterol is making me sick…

"The French fried potato has become an inescapable horror in almost every public eating place in the country. "French fries," say the menus, but they are not French fries any longer. They are a furry-textured substance with the taste of plastic wood."

Interesting...lots of information here...I too have heard that the style was originated in Belgium...
I tend to look at the French problem as an issue of breaking up a united front...
I believe if all the countries in the world would stand in a united front against leaders such as Saddam perhaps a war would not be necessary.
The UN resolution 1441 was created to tell Saddam to get rid of his weapons of mass destruction...James

Noah, this is brilliant. I too heard the news story of the 'french' fries and laughed as I'm sure the President of France could care less what we call potatoes fried in deep fat!

Great write filled with lots of interesting facts. You are wonderful.  Hugs, Marti

Noah, This is a very weird poem. But has much information. And I agree. The french fries they serve now are dusgustng. I like the way my mom cooked em. Big and fat, long and crispy on the outside, and soft in the inside..

Read ^ there, because you are reading the wrong part!

Noah, a very, very informative poem,
but I love french fries
(though I don't need the fat and cholesterol, either) and that's
what I'll keep calling them.

Hi Noah,
You had to do a lot of research for this. I love the way you put it together. And I think it is silly to change the name, too. French fries they will always be!

Lot of stuff I had no idea about in this. Have to say though 'long live the french fry'.

Love reading all these great writes.
I write not!
