He watches as she walks away.
Angry pride in every step.
His memory fades, 5 long years,
to the summer they first met.

She had just turned seven,
he'd been almost Ten.
They'd shared a love of baseball,
the best of friends back then.

Skipped rocks across the lily pond.
Caught frogs and fireflies.
When asked about her, he'd reply,
"she's just one of the guys."

The summer when he broke his arm,
a rusty fence, the girl right there.
He'd told his mom it was his fault,
in truth it'd been her double dare.

Summers pass and seasons change.
Flowers bloom and gardens grow.
Little boys turn into men.
Little girls change too, you know.

He's laughing with the other boys,
he keeps his feelings hid.
He notices the change in her,
but says she's just a kid.

He glances at her one last time
to watch her walk away.
She'd never looked more beautiful,
then she did this summer day.

Remember me with a smile on your face, or please don't remember me at all.

Thanks for the challenge Sunshine.. I seem to have lost my muse lately. Thoughts of summers past have helped push a few poetic ramblings from me today.. perhaps you can help inspire in a new direction.. I'm up to it if you are!

Very beautifully written. It's amazing how many guys have been through this same scenario. You captured it perfectly.

Ok then...you're on!  Let's go for the outsider, looking in...watching the two of them that summer day....

I KNOW you can do it!
