I fished an ice cube from my drink
because I knew that just one more
would mar the shade of amber-tall--
"damn, don't I look good in red?"
I saw the white break through in chips.
I gazed at moldy ceiling dark
and down the bar, they saw me bored.

I flipped a cartoon coaster then--
just because I could--
aiming for the slight fissure
above me, breaking
the white light
as though I were a saint.
(I wrote the script on napkins there...)
and there were maps in vinyl veins
waiting for my destiny.

Bob was there.
He brought his cane.
Leather from the finest bulls---
testicles in stretch of pull.
I always thought he didn't get
the joke--a shame it was on him--
he needed dead bull's balls to walk.
He had a polished brass steer head
boasting two proud sturdy horns.
I thought that gave him leverage,
but he wobbled anyway
and I was never quite convinced
if I loved Bob, or loved his cane.

Ann was there in full red hair;
she always wore it tight---
and then she'd let it down with flair
I admit I was surprised
the first time that I'd seen that bun
free of pins and hair unsprung--
wondering why she hid all night--
all that flame
just waiting there.

I didn't know of drama then.

Sandy always looked so sad.
She was the sort that had that "look".
Wide brown eyes in search of yours,
she always seemed truly concerned--
asking, "Do you want some more?"
and before you would say "no"
you found another there.

Soldiers in a line of stand
sometimes chips to spare the ice.
cigarettes and bad juke box
and bad dancers asking twice
making me grow mean and dark
telling them just where to go
with notes profound
"where to get off"
with details certainly implied.

You'd think
they might have changed the mix--
it still tasted of goldfish--
and some grit of crumbled cheese
one lone pretzel protesting
lack of mustard dignity--

my god, what am I doing here?

(smiles) I'll just stay away from that Scary Smooth and enjoy some nice honey chamomile tea! (kiss on cheek) This is a wonderfully haunting image, sweet friend, this almost felt to me like some kind of Moulin Rouge-esque night joint, I LOVE IT, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karen, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Karen, I felt like I was right there with you in the bar...

Hey, I asked Capt. Ron what "scary smooth" was the other day and can't find the thread to see what he said. But, maybe Jason answered then? Is it moonshine, mountain dew....something like that?

If so, if I ever drink again, it'll  still be rum and coke, I would imagine.....

Heart Hugs,
Ethel

Man... talk about "where everybody knows your name"... Very, very nicely done.

For all those interested...
The original Scary Smooth was a bottle of Ezra Brooks Kentucky Whiskey that I bought from a friend of mine's store (He was the manager.) He described it as "Scary Smooth", and another member of Passions took it and ran with it.

HeeHee....Ringo...is "scary smooth" as potent as "Wild Turkey"? I'd probably better stay with "Bacardi Rum"....that is if I ever drink again.....I'm crazy enough without that. I do like to get together with friends, though...

even with my rotten memory, there are some things I just can't forget. Remind me not to go there again. The place was damned depressing. sigh...

hugs all. I think I'm gonna fight the pillows early for a change. (and yes, this IS early for me.)

love you all.

Good line...nicely played collection of words...I keep trying to tuck my feet beneath the barstool.
