“Study: Amish Population Nearly Doubles in 16 Years”

!!!!!

“In Mayfield, Ky., an area into which a few hundred Amish have moved in recent years, nine men are fighting charges they operated horse-drawn buggies without the flashing lights or orange safety triangles that state law requires.”

Why?

I have a lot of respect for the Amish, in fact I’ll even admit to being somewhat jealous of their lifestyle - minus the religious bit of course.

Can you be an atheist Amish? If so where do I join?

I, too, have nothing but respect for my many Amish neighbors. I'm not sure I could say this area is predominantly Amish, but it's certainly heavily Amish. And I've learned a lot about their culture and ways in the decade since moving here.

One of the things I've learned is that they're not greatly different than any other group of people. Just as in every assembly of individuals, there are good Amish, not so good Amish, strict Amish, and not so strict Amish. They're people.

I've also learned not to drive behind a buggy and then drive into a clean garage. Getting that stuff off your tires is a messy job.

I still want to know why, John, you consider this story an "ominous sign".

I think his tongue was firmly embedded in his cheek when he said it, just insert a - (not!) - at the end and it makes more sense.
