Winter's Last Breath

The bleak winter sky, snowflakes swirling around
romance in their dance as they float to the ground
chilling our bones, but delighting our eyes
yesterday felt like spring, now a winter surprise

each snowflake, unique...no two alike
slowly building a mantle of white
tangled branches, dressed in pristine virgin snow
starkly contrast the melting pond, below

wind rattles the trees, softness blankets the ground
winter's reprisal, one last time around
an encore of chill, the windy white mirth
now cover the signs of springtime's rebirth

newly formed buds, enveloped in frost
will springtime revive them, or will they be lost?
premature sprouts, nearly frozen to death
so vulnerable to winter's last breath

spring has been teasing, but winter holds sway
lets enjoy her cold beauty for just one more day

Madame - You have captured this odd weather beautifully. Over here in Ontario we have just the same. Well done and enjoyed. Chris

Love this Lyra...still coming down over here on the Canadian side of the tunnel, and looks so pretty even after yesterday's near record setting temps.
I hope indeed that it was winter's last breath!
Lovely one dear poetess!

(smiling) While the poem is masterful in its telling and creation of image...I will defer the cold to others...and winter may stay with those who enjoy it. ( OK so we have it too..but I'm grumbling anyway )

Your writing is truly elegant Lyra~
I admire the way you capture the moment no matter what your subject is.
This was so lovely.

Nightshade...thanks for your reply.  It seems today, like its snowing all over the world...although I know that it isn't.

Victoria...thank you, I am very glad that you enjoyed it.  I don't know where you live,or whether or not you ever have snow...but as long as I don't have to drive in it...I adore the snow.

Marsha...thank you so much.  You always give me the most "utterly" wonderful compliments...I love you for that

Noah...thank you for your reply, I bet you have a lot more snow in Colorado than we have in Michigan

Nancy...thanks so much, we usually end up having similar weather, except last time, I think you got the ice storm worse than we did and this time, I think we got a bit more snow...we already have about 8 inches piled up, and more is expected tonight and tomorrow.

Cpat...thanks for your reply, It sounds like you live either in Michigan or Canada...and I am just really curious...what does your name mean?   It certainly is original

Lori...thank you so much for that very BIG compliment and for always replying to my poems.

Vandana...thanks so much...glad you enjoyed

Madame - I just love your precious poetry, indeed I do. But, no more snow, no more cold, just want to see spring...
