Wild

Once before he'd seen her tracks
on hot pavement, wet and steamy.
Here, an otter from the creek
had stretched full length
and privatized a public road
despite some traffic.
What made her pause and court such risk
upon a surface foreign to the forest.
Perhaps she liked against her teats
the sucking feel of stone aggregate,
or errant gravel edged like teeth.
He closed his eyes and saw her suit,
sleek and shining in the sun,
streaming water. He looked again
and saw the heat induce a sleep,
hot and restive, burning red beneath her eyelids;
responding to the playful splash,
a rainbow shape as her back arched
rolling over on one hip,
her weight sinking
into the pool-side concrete.

and that, Sir, is writing!
