Coffee on the Deck

Coffee was good this morning,
on the deck, in the cold air,
breath, clouds of white disappearing,
souls of other lives diving back into the warmth
from which it came.

A mockingbird's first song of the season,
robins restlessly flicking their tails high in the tree,
waxwings looking north, icicles melting,
males chasing females - all nature feeling spring.

Looking at a single leaf on the table
beside my steaming cup of coffee,
I see the bones of last springs life,
Was there a soul in that leaf,
did it feel the pain of its demise,
does it now look upon its remains
with longing for the vibrancy of its youth?

Leaning over the cup, I inhale deeply
tasting the aroma of its breathe with all my senses,
Ah, the coffee is good this morning,
and as much as I'd like to expound my thoughts
of life and other things, I drain the cup,
the last in the pot…and head for the house,
my job, and all the other mundane things
that'll make my day.

But another morning will come,
another pot of coffee,
more time on the deck,
time to contemplate,
time to see the things
that want to be seen,
time to be alone, peaceful, thoughtful…
The coffee will be good then, too.

If I could, I would sit on that deck and sip a cup of coffee with you. I really like the way you held the leaf up for closer inspection, to see a piece of Life itself in the palm of your hand.

jwesley...so good to read your work again.  Just moved and had a dead jack so I couldn't go on line. This poem is exquisite. Simply beautiful. That steaming cup of coffee filling the air with its welcome aroma, its easy warmth. WONDERFUL POEM!!!! Great to see an old friend in a new place.

I’m so jealous…I want summer to come here soon so I can have coffee on the deck and watch the squirrels.  Sounds like a great start to your day.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Hey "j" not only do I get to read you again, but we share a cup of coffee...every day should be started with a bit of quiet meditation--that is, if you can make it to the deck without having to find one child's sock and another child's folder, and make lunch for "The Big Child" lol...no wonder I go back to bed!

Beautiful view of you in this!

Wow, a cup of cover never sounded so good!
This was so full of human thought and emotion.
The setting was magnificent and the view was very real to me.
Just about perfect I'd say!!

Thank you for this!

Wasn't coming back in here today...but after seeing all the notices hit my email had too.  Wow!  Not what I expected to see...it was just part of a bunch of ramblings I've written...not even sure why I posted it.

Lost a monitor...took a while to replace (and do you know that you can't "see" anything on your computer without one - I mean, the computer's totally useless.
It just sits there with all it's various lights and sounds and looks at you like.."Well!!"
Anyway...sold a couple of kids and now have a new monitor (and silence! Yes!)

Kidding of course. About the monitor I mean. (hee hee)

Anyway...gonna try and get back in here in a couple days or so and see what I've missed and pass along some thoughts and such.

Sea - yep, I'll bet you do too.

Midnight Sun - Thank you my friend and I'd love to share a couple cups with you...
Would like to listen to the things you could share...

Ivy Rose -  You never cease to make me feel special (though we both know better)
and that's always a pleasure.  Glad to hear your voice too.

Tracey  - in spite of what Bill Murry (or was that the groundhog) may have said,
your day is coming.  I did have it on the deck and I'm jealous that I can't
do so every day!  This time of year (the interlude between Winter and Spring
when everything is changing cloaks, the birds and animals are restless,
and the mornings...my gosh, just filled with bird songs.

Mystic Mystron - don't recognize the handle (I did sleep last night though so...) so
                          HI THERE MY FRIEND...
Thanks for the kind words and I will have that cup on you soon.

Enchantress - Hey Nancy, you come by and I'll drag out the whole pot!

Serenity - Ah my friend...yeah I emphathiize with you (actually sympathize now as mie
are both gone - essentially anyway.  My daughter will be 21 next month
(she just moved back in----HMMMMM!), and my son is 19 and lives in the
dorm at A&M all week though we get to see his smiling face every
week-end since he's only two hours away and his girl friend lives just up the
street (thank you Katie for bringing him around!)  and I promise to think of you
each sip I take, if that helps any.

Magicmystery - hope you got that cup!  You sounded desperate!  Thanks for the neat
                        comment.

BluesSerenade - always does my heart good to hear from you.  Thanks and glad
it added a little to your day.

James, me friend...you're correct of couse...we all have our ways and days - life would
surely be dull without the interlude they bring.

Nitey night...my friends (if I missed anybody...GET ON MY CASE!!!  I didn't mean to.

jimmy  (I don't spell check this stuff so suffer)

Well jwesley, from a coffe addict here, and a particular one as to coffees, and from a nature lover also, you know I loved this  poem. Why does coffee taste better outdoors. This was great. floria

jwesley - I'd love to join you in that cup of coffee early in the morning. Listen to the birds sing, the peacefulness of it all, wonder, ponder, yes all these...
