A very strange experience occurred last week to me...
Re-union of my high school class of 1963.
It was so long since I'd been back I wasn't sure I'd know
A single, solitary face but I just had to go.

Nostalgic waves of reminisces flooded through my brain
Recalling all those care-free days of school and raising cane
In days still free of obligations, marriages and strife
Where only sports and pretty smiles composed a happy life.

So I went back to my old school and entered through the door
Excited to meet all the school chums I had known before.
I looked around the room, anticipation on my face
But didn't recognize one single person in the place!

There were so many bald heads there - so many horn-rimmed glasses,
So many dumpy matrons that had grown from comely lasses.
I tried so to relate to them but it was very hard.
I felt that I had walked into a geriatric ward!!

Those high school jocks that dunked the ball or scored touchdowns with ease
Now walked around with bellies that went half-way to their knees!
Those pretty faces I had kissed and loved so long ago
Now left me shaking with relief that they had told me no!

They spoke of operations and the troubles they'd been through
And vitamins and IRA's and "I've got more than you!"
Men tried to hold their stomachs in with belts that had no slack
And tried to dance the Twist in ways to not throw out their back.

Well, I got through it - don't know how - the name tags helped a lot.
They asked me if I'd come again in five years...I think not.
It was a good experience but, if the truth be told,
I've no desire to be with them - those guys are WAY TOO OLD!!!

LOL! Oh my gosh, I would never ever want to go back and attend my high school reunion when that time comes for me, for I have no friends at school my own age and no one would ever know me like that! (sigh) I can understand all you went through, sweet fridn, it's as if you are supposed to be a guest of honor but it's all about them when they're talking! (big hugggsssss) I can't blame you for not wishing to come back, sweet friend, this is a wonderfully delightful and funny retrospective, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Michael, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

ROFL..I had this same experience with my reunion of the class of 71, last fall.
There were 4 or 5 women who still looked somewhat related to who they used to be, but not one of the men. It was hilarious to walk around and not recognize anyone. And people would come up and know me, and I would be a big blank..
I agree, they are too old for me.
Your poems are so perfect for storytelling. Made me smile.

Noah...you have plenty of time to become successful and famous and make them sorry for not having been your friend. Success is the greatest revenge!!

Sandra...I'm sure they ARE way too old for you! You must have been then envy - and enemy - of every woman there!

Victoria...Of course they recognized me....I hadn't changed!!! LOL!!!

When I'm forty-eight and my mind is but eighteen
My mental mirror has an image of someone lean and mean
when I'm fifty-two and my aches are a little more
still a woman of twenty-two comes strutting through the door

And when I'm ninety-one and my shoulders are purple shawled
make sure you ring the doorbell twice, just so I know you've called...

’Deer dearest heart OH my this is just too too perfect, I love it love it love it. Perhaps you were at the wrong one, are you sure you weren’t? No, because it did happen to me, not a school reunion but an office party I went to and I was at the wrong office, so no wonder I didn’t recognise anyone there. Funny enough the number of people who were chatting to me, and no one asked me why I was there It could only happen to me Every one else checks the place they are supposed to go.

This is as always utterly utterly superb, and I love the flow, and the meter, which is absolutely perfect. Again dearest ‘Deer you arrested my attention and took me into your High School reunion, and a very interesting time it was too.

I’ve been invited to a school reunion actually, but I don’t think I’ll go, if I did I may well get an overwhelming desire to take up my old prefects job as the Library co-ordinator. Once in the library I’d be lost for days, and who knows when I’d re-emerge into the bosom of my family.

This is an absolutely excellent poem another keeper, Krissy will be so fed up she missed this one There is another two points to me, YES! Superb, I’m doing a victory shimmy even as I type this. Wonderful, and the poem is Terrific too

So many dumpy matrons that had grown from comely lasses.

I loved this one, Michael!

My high school class has never held a reunion, but if they did, I don't know if I would go.
I actually feel younger and prettier now than when I was in high school....that is only when I compare myself to my contemporaries...not when I compare myself to someone who is really younger and prettier.
My first husband used to tell people that he kept me in a preservative at night and that is why I was so well preserved.

Sunshine...what a delightful response!! Knock twice? I'll break the door down!

mushy..the thought of you doing a victory shimmy is not for the faint of heart! I'm sure the bosom of you family will always be there for you. Thank you for your experiences

Madame C...I can assure you that you would be the envy of everyone there! Your hubby kept you in preservatives? I'd get in a jam with you any day!

Amy...I think you have a face that will never grow old....you definitely don't need to be around a bunch of fogeys!! Thanls for enjoying..

ROFL ... oh, you are truly wonderful Michael !  What a wonderful piece, full of the wit and charm that is "you". I absolutely loved this, from the perfection in the cadence and rhyme, to the wonderful visuals you gave me. What a way to start my morning ... grinning.

Best wishes and hugs,

’Deer Hi there, and you did it again didn’t you? You’ve written an absolutely fabulous poem, which is perfect in construction, flow and meter. Do you even realise that your writing is incredibly good? It is as mum would say utterly utterly excellent

I really did enjoy this, I went to a school reunion last year, you have never seen such a collection or weirdoes, geeks, social misfits and down right oddballs in your life. These cannot have been the people I shared my form with.

Now mum about that victory shimmy, do you want to say that again? Hmmmm? No I bet you don’t

Superb writing 'Deer I really do love this poem it's another keeper. Thank you

Bless you, BalladearOne. *S* After attending my first reunion, I swore I'd never attend another... but I guess senior moments are happening more often these days, for I'd honestly considered giving it another try this year and let reality intrude on my memories. Thanks for this excellent reminder that I MUST HAVE LOST MY MIND to be thinking such nonsense! LOL (Or maybe it's just that lobotomy you're so sure I've had? *G*)

This was so smooth! You had me laughing all the way through. I went to the ten year reunion, and swore I'd never go again. And I haven't. All the people I liked weren't there, I felt all alone. Something like high school, actually.
