Ok Kari and Ron...you win

Encompassed Destination

Somewhere between degrees
of latitudes and longitudes
lies the distance that now
defines, denies, and directs her.

White lined lanes and runways
wind endlessly into the horizon.
Miles of mapped and compassed
concrete and clouds. Highways
that bend and curve like her need.
Roads that rise like the lonely
and the ache that drives her.

On a day that holds winter too tightly
and frigid winds frost her words ...
she whispers across the distance
calling to the warm sand reverie that
holds her heart in tide taken requite.

No amount of nights spent
in front of the fire will ever
season her senses like the sharing of
sunrise saturated shorelines sated her.

The same degrees of distance
that now deny her, will eventually
lead her farther on ...

Destination:
36° N. Latitude 76° W. Longitude

She'll have no need of maps ...
her heart knows the way.

Chesapeake Bay
36° N. Latitude 76° W. Longitude

"Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone ...
somewhere watching me
Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like a fire in my blood"

~Bonnie Tyler~

The alliteration alone speaks volumes...
wind that up with a heart on the wind...
and you have brilliance...

YOU... and your fancy alliterations!  Sometimes I forget to remember those things when I'm writing, but they seem like a second nature to you.  You always mix your letters around so beautifully, even in looser poetry formats.  Your skill with words really makes me jealous, girl.

I'm on these really stupid computers at school that won't let me copy/paste, and I'll be damned if I'm copying your poem out word-for-word, so forgive me for not including block quotations in my reply.  I'll just give you an overall impression.

Gotta say, your introductory stanza is just perfect.  It says everything that the poem expands on, all in four well-composed lines.  Meets every standard for an introduction, it's almost essay-like.  Absolutely splendid.

The whole poem dives right into the imagery aspect, you describe every last aspect of the scene to the point where I can picture it myself (without the need of your visual aids... I always read your stuff in the "topic review" window because your pictures are so gosh-darn distracting).

Her interaction with the environment just completes the package, bringing the character to the setting, letting the two mingle and dance.  I especially like how you wove her actions into the environment, saying the cold winds "frost her words," adds to imagery and tells a story all at the same time.

Everything you write, JM... it's like you're right there, talking from all your senses about every thought that enters your mind.  I admire your style so much, I was going to post something after reading this, but now I'm reconsidering... think I have to go work on it a bit...

Next time you go to Chesapeake, phone me up... I could use some of that inspiration.

Well now, Janet Marie ... how on earth did I get so lucky to find 2 from you today!!!

The beauty and inspiration of your latitude and longitude flows all the way out to these coordinates in the chilly north. Lovely visuals, JM ...

"No amount of nights spent in
front of the fire will ever
season her senses like the
sunrise saturated shorelines sated her."

and I love your closing ...

"She'll have no need of maps ...
her heart knows the way."

No maps required, indeed, when the heart knows the way inherently. Beautifully written, gator gal ... a treasure.

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

I still don't know what to say...you bare the soul so beautifully and with such grace that after reading I feel stunned silence. I TRIED to do the scansion but found myself scrolling up and down and sideways smiling.

YOU...are so beautiful...
