Never once did you hesitate
When the call for help came through
From far and wide you'd join your colleagues
For them there was nothing you wouldn't do

On Christmas Eve you drove interstate
So many firetrucks raced to the scene
New South Wales was overcome by fire
Such an atrocity must surely be a dream

You left behind your families
To help strangers in desperate need
So very selfless and so courageous
As you tirelessly went about your deed

So proud we were of every one of you
Giving your help at this time of year
Your celebrations were now put on hold
As you'd be delaying your Christmas cheer

New Years Day and the fire has worsened
Nearing suburbia as the wind remains strong
We hear these fires were lit deliberately
By persons who should know right from wrong

Such a senseless act of stupidity
Has put a nation on full alert
Not once did these mindless idiots
Consider that people could get hurt

A lesson to be learnt in humanity
From the firefighters who give their all
You make all Australians so very proud
And together as a nation we stand tall

AT LEASE 100 BUSHFIRES STRETCHING OVER 600 KMS
ARE BURNING ACROSS NEW SOUTH WALES AS SYDNEY
CHOKES UNDER A THICK BLANKET OF SMOKE AND ASH.
A STRIKE FORCE OF 20,000 FIREFIGHTERS FROM
ALL STATES OF AUSTRALIA ARE IN A RACE AGAINST
TIME TO STOP THE BUSHFIRES FROM RAGING OUT OF
CONTROL ACROSS NEW SOUTH WALES.ALREADY 150
HOMES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND HUNDREDS OF
PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LEFT HOMELESS.

THREE TEENAGERS HAVE ADMITTED TO LIGHTING THE FIRES

THIS WAS WRITTEN FOR ALL THOSE FIREFIGHTERS
AND VOLUNTEERS WHO LEFT THEIR FAMILIES AT
CHRISTMAS TO SELFLESSLY HELP THOSE IN NEED.
HOW VERY PROUD THEY HAVE MADE US FEEL TO BE
AUSTRALIAN.THANK YOU FOR READING THIS......SUE

May God be with you all--
...just give a yell - we will be glad to lend a hand

There is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar.

Oh Sue, this absolutely wrenches my heart!  What a senseless act of vandalism, and for what?  I hope you send this poem to your local newspaper and get it put into the paper - send it to the editor for publication, and let us hear that it was done.  Being in Canada I appreciate you sharing news with me, as I have friends but in Melbourne, but one of our poets lives in Syndey.  Sorry, not to go on, but acts of this sort absolutely amaze me.  Stand proud you wrote of thier honor well and how they gave up their holiday for someone else's foolish deeds.  Thanks for sharing.

Well done Sue! Though I am I'm safe where I live there are many who are not. I can now look in any direction and see a fire, and there seems little relieve in sight

It is horific my friend ... I grew up in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, and spent much time as a youth out at the fire fronts with the local bush fire brigade as a volunteer ... those memories I will never forget ... May God watch over them all, and may He bless you for writing such a caring and compassionate piece as this   )  Andy

Oh Sue ... this just brings this horrific scene to light. An amazing tribute to those fighting this horrible fire. I thought I heard on the news just a half an hour ago, that they had arrested 21 teens so far? This is just atrocious! The pictures they showed on CNN were astonishing ... you could see the smoke for miles. My heart goes out to all involved ...

Best wishes,
/Kit

Hooray for our Firefighters, nationwide!
They often work in obscurity plying their dangerous trade and it is good for us to remember how much we depend upon them 24/7, 365 days a year.
Well done!

Suetang,

We've been very worried about our other friends in Australia, and they've sent us some pictures of the fire taken from their home.  Fires can be seen in every direction.

Thank you for this wonderful tribute to the firemen who risk their lives that others may be safe.

I thank God you are safe too.

I sent this poem to my friends in Australia.

SueTang, I can't see the fire but I'm very aware of it, Thanks for posting this tribute to the brave men fighting the fires in New South Wales.

I'm so glad that so many stopped to read this one.  As I write this the fires are still burning and to dat 21 people have been arrested in connection with the fires, one being a 9 year old boy.  I just can't comprehend how people would want to do such a thing.....so much loss of homes, flora and fauna.  Thank goodness no lives have been lost yet.  Take care........Sue
