The Pushcart Peddler

The pushcart peddler has it all
thick or thin
big or small

pots and pans
things in cans
paintings wrought of artist's hands

useful tools
thread on spools
ice to keep your picnics cool

antique dishes
fresh caught fishes
all you need for meals, delicious

tallow for candles
summer sandals
spray to chase away the vandals

men's underwear
girl's dresses, fair
combs and brushes for your hair

crackerjacks
and sealing wax
coffee which is vacuum packed

red or green
or in between
its the biggest collection you've ever seen

he's always at your beck and call
the pushcart peddler
he's got it all

Lyra--Such a romatic look at a time that was so simple...I guess the pushcart was the first supermarket.  Loved your poem!

Barry...thanks so much, glad you enjoyed. Now what is it that you need from the peddler?

Noah...thanks so much for that wonderful compliment.

Martin...thank you, but I don't think that any of the peddlers sold poetry...at least not the ones in the Bronx, where I grew up.
I remember the seltzer man, the vegetable man, the cocoanut man, the knife sharpener man...and probably some others...but not the poetry man.  Interestingly, the picture at the top of this poem is from the United Jewish Appeal of Canada...it was painted in Toronto.  I thought that might interest you.

Martie...thanks so much for your reply.  When I was searching for that picture I learned that the origin of pushcart peddlers was the Jewish immigrants who came over to the United States without any money...and they really needed to start their businesses on a shoestring...and from those little pushcart businesses, grew many of todays large businesses...such as, supermarkets and clothing stores.

Floria...thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed this little look at the past.  I don't know where you live, but I haven't seen an ice cream truck in years.

Newell and Bill...thanks so much for your replies, and I'm glad that you enjoyed the poem. It was a walk back through memory lane for me.  I grew up in NYC and still remember some of these peddlers from when I was very little.

Juanita...thanks for the reply and the chocolate kiss!

Stevie...I think its more like a garbage man in reverse!  You would have to sell the garbage and make some money on it ...Maybe you should go into that business!
Thanks for replying

Interloper...thanks much, Sometimes I wish that we lived in simpler times

Thanks Stevie...am I invited to your next yard sale?

Victoria...thank you, I actually got this idea while I was thinking about my childhood in NYC.  We had lots of peddlers coming around back then.  The one I especially remember is the seltzer man because he would come up to our apartment with his seltzer bottles and take the empties to recycle them.
It was definitely a simpler time.

What great memories this stirred up.  Do you remember that great book:  The Pushcart Wars ?   I was always in awe of someone who pushed their store around in streets.

Wonderful imagination you have, Madame Chipmunk!
