A Soddy Journal Memory, Summer, 1875

He had been out
Walking his fields, planning
Next year’s crop, early,
Old Richard jutting
From his back pocket

When he went to the creek
He bent to one knee
Cupped his hands
Welled clear water
Drank its cool

Spied the rock

A largish piece, yellowed
Quartz, crystallized jagged edges
Two larger crystals
Overlapping one another
Bringing to his mind
The way her head
Crossed his chest
Late at night

He could see in the stone
Its promise, a beauty
That had not yet reached
The surface,
Akin to a fine woman
Not yet aged…

He was fey to far-reaching
Thought, his mind working
Towards December’s
Christmas gift

He gazed up their creek; saw
Where water gurgled
A faster flow, his thoughts running,
Toppling like dominoes ~
How he would
Improvise a tumbling
Barrel to smooth this,
And a few other choice
Stones

And knew, come Christmas,
His love’s eyes
Would glitter
Like the stone in his hand
As he lay his gift
Around her neck

A talisman of promise,
For that yet to come.

What a beautiful tale, Sunshine...only someone deeply in love would do such a thing, I think...thank you for sharing, I loved it.

You know how they used to sit under a tree in the olden days while someone read a story to a group?  Well that is what I am feeling here, and I am loving it, yes indeedydo!
