Lessons Learned

I say good bye to this past year
With both regret to see it go
And with happiness to see it pass
Such a year of change for me
So many lessons I have learned
Lessons that I needed to know
The pain I hope not to know again
My soul taking so many blows
Moves tattered, yet full to the New Year

I cried the hot tears of love’s pain
Watching whom I thought was my heart
Walk away without looking back.
He said he loved me too much.
I didn’t feel loved enough.
Now, with time past... I understand.
My heart finding silent closure
Leaving a jagged line of memory

I have inflicted the pain of heartache
On someone else’s tender soul.
Something I still can’t manage to forgive
Never meaning to cause pain
At the time of my regretful act
My world was a haze of agony..
I wish I could erase the time
And keep the lessons learned.

I have met some beautiful souls
Learned from their wisdom of time
They opened my heart to such love
I mourned their soft passing
As I took a calm comfort
Knowing they have a greater
Surrounding peace and love.
They will always be in my heart
Smiling with their undeniable strength.
While the tears of memory past
Keep them so very much alive.

I have come full circle, in the end
Finding a love to soothe me
Caress away the heartache and pain
To bring back the pure joy I’ve lost
Showing me love, hope, warmth and faith.
Making me stronger than I ever
Thought I could be again.
Making my heart full and thankful
And with this man’s sweet love
I will thrive and become the woman
I’ve always wanted to become
The woman I find when he whispers
I love you.

For the first time I honestly felt fear
Watching as the black smoke rose
My heart ached with the sorrow
Of the lives lost. Families broken.
Patriotism that has been missing
Has found its way home, burning
Bright and strong inside my heart.
Pride holds my head high
Proud of our country’s strong spirit
Overflowing with love and strength

So I bid a wistful farewell
Quiet in my revolving thoughts.
Carrying my new found wisdom
Into another new year of unknown
Wondering what moments of joy
And moments of pain lie ahead.
I know that I am ready for
What hills and curves life holds
The unsure times that lie ahead
Opening my arms to embrace
The tears.. both happy and sad
Welcoming my future memories.
Accepting my lessons still not learned.

I hope nothing but happiness and fulfilled dreams for all of you this year. Be strong, be happy, and most of all be safe. Happy New Year.

Tara - Nicely done.  We certainly won't forget 2001 because of 9/11.  A day that will live on in infamy.

The third stanza is definitely a feeling I can relate to, but we all do make mistakes.  I hope all your future memories are good ones.

Very well written, Tara.  Good for you on picking up the pieces and getting on with life.  You're not a quitter, which makes you a winner.

Beautifully written, Tara...especially these lines.

I have met some beautiful souls
Learned from their wisdom of time
They opened my heart to such love
I mourned their soft passing
As I took a calm comfort
Knowing they have a greater
Surrounding peace and love.
They will always be in my heart
Smiling with their undeniable strength.
While the tears of memory past
Keep them so very much alive.

Thanks for sharing and have a great 2002.

this just goes to show you that people can take away very different "lessons" from the same set of events.
this is a wonderful explanation of your lessons, dear.
as always, i deeply enjoy your writing.
