I was born near the river where Charlie came to live
sometimes the water still calls his name
his father gave him everything a father could give
with a heart full of love and faith.

Charlie's chair was modeled in a very special way
and he'd wheel it to my back porch calling me
six years of childhood fills my mind with those days
and how his laughter brought me peace

Chorus:
I spent my youth with a minuteman and a dreamer
I shared my time with the visions of a prince
I gave my faith to praying for a healer
and when I'm alone....he's my strength within....

as the years passed by we roamed the riverside
the waters rolling by us filled with life.
but Charlie grew so weak and gradually he'd cry
as I wheeled him through my darkest fright.

Chorus:
I spent my youth with a minuteman and a dreamer
I shared my time with the visions of a prince
I gave my faith to praying for a healer
and when I'm alone....he's my strength within....

Bridge:
Charlie's simple verses, a gift of life he'd speak
a way beyond MS all crossing the next bridge
his wheelchair humming to the tune of his big speech
bout his father saving money for his college.
bout his father saving money for his college

well Charlie got so dizzy when the pains roamed his head
the medicine he recieved no longer kept him right.
and one night he wheeled himself into the river's depth
to send a young soldier to the sky.

to send a young soldier to the sky.....

Chorus:
I spent my youth with a minuteman and a dreamer
I shared my time with the visions of a prince
I gave my faith to praying for a healer
and when I'm alone....he's my strength within....

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie

This is beautiful, but it brought tears to my eyes. MS is such torture, yet Charlie found ways to make his stay worthwhile, sharing love and harmony with another soul.
I love this one, Eric.

Eric--I know you touched his life, as he did yours..and now you both touch mine with this poem.

An excellent song and an equally excellent story, eric. I can imagine this entire scenario portrayed in front of my eyes...

A haunting, but beautiful song of memories. Wonderfully written as always

ethome - this is a great song, and I would love to hear the music to it. I like it much. I've been writing songs for a while and would like to hear it. What instrument do you play?
