The Street    Part 2

Sometimes, if he walked with his head down,
he would find needed things,
quarters and nickels for necessities,
nails to hold together his rat-trap abode,
and pretty pieces of colored glass
just to look at.
Most of the time,
he saw things he didn’t need,
like dirty diapers and smashed cigarettes.

He didn’t care if he died,
would eat and drink from the dumpster
to fill the ache.
It was a mean lesson
from a cracked jar of mayonnaise
taught him things were thrown away
that made him powerful sick, not dead.
A dented can of spaghetti
and wilted lettuce,
even a bag of bran muffins,
eased the hunger this day.

He liked the sky,
sat down on an empty bus bench
to look at the bellowing,
remembering many skies.

Sun-sets had mended him some,
they were like a prayer,
prayers of burnt orange, purple and mauve.
He would say the names of colors
in his mind,
tasting the sound,
like cake at a church social.

Yes, he had been to church,
that was another life ago.

Your words are keeping me interested in this series. It's hard for some of us to imagine the way some people have to live to make it in this world.Keep going.I like reading your writing.

Another lifetime ago - that is the story for most of these folks, as they are so much just like us.  Martie do tell..........

The picture you paint is an unpleasant one .....much as I am sure this man's existance is unpleasant.

Thus you have done an excellent job.

This is tearing my heart out to read and accept that this is the life of so many yet still I read on that I may learn compassion and understanding that they too are human just like all of us. They too are children of God. My heart goes out to them all. Magnificent work, Martie.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

You have captivated me with his story, Martie.  This is exceptional.

After just two, I feel I know him. I've said many times, you somehow pull the reader into the life of your subjet.
Another exceptional glimpse.
