This holiday season adopt a stray lioness
do not leave a feline in distress;
since antiquity cats have been guardians, I confess,
yet they have fallen to disfavour nonetheless.

They were kept to guard manuscripts in the Far East
In the middle ages they were seen as lesser beasts;
they served to keep the rat population under control
as you know rats spread disease and took their toll.

In early America, ugly old ladies from society outcast
with these creatures, were seen to keep company fast;
ignorance in social circles soon infused
accused cats as helpers of withcraft abused.

Today, with a cat on my front porch
when an intruder enters, it lights a torch;
they know who is friendly and who disturbed
that way you can choose your company unperturbed.

this is true Balladeer, but I kept this short
thanks for the reminder..I remember about Sekhmet, the keeper of the dead in Egyptian Mytholgy.

I too had more dogs than cats at one time,Sea, now it's the other away around.

Though I've never had a dog, I have...at 2 separate times, had a cat.
I really like cats...they seem to have so much dignity and independance....kinda like me LOL
But for some reason, both of those cats liked to spray, even though we had them neutered at the right time.
The second one we had, liked to knock all of my plants over...he did it religiously...
and the first cat, used to pick my kids' underwear off the floor of their rooms and carry it down to the livingroom....
I also trained him to answer the phone.
Great poem, Martin.

Ah, the mysterious feline ... much enjoyed your glimpse into the world of cats Ecrivan. I've had both dogs and cats, and loved them all.  If I could have one hundred pets ... I would, no question. Thank you for the smiles.

Best wishes,
/Kit
