"HOW DID YOU GET HERE?"

(Copyright 2001 by: MARK V SHELDON)

Gray concrete
slightly darker than your hair
When did this become
your beauty rest?
Bony knuckles -- the only friends
you have left
conformed into a headrest
as your leather eyelids
blanket you from
the cold of this world
You lie like an embryo
waiting for your birthday
Your entire universe
inside your silver Pavillions
What treasures hide there?
When you awaken, it won't be to
freshly ground coffee
it'll be to a craving for
water

to drink

to cleanse

to be born again

Vividly expressed Mark.  I felt the cold, harshness of their slumber as I read through to the end.  Nicely portrayed.

Hugs,
~Krista

Your beautiful words & creativity allow me to connect with the same in myself.
Thank you for having the courage to share yourself so that I can too

Well done Mark.  Love ones that leave me thinking.  Now I shall sit and ponder this the rest of the afternoon.  ~NancyLee~

Krista, not nearly as vivid as the impressions left upon me when seeing such sights in person, but thank you for the read and reply.

Nancy, thank you -- that is one of the highest compliments I can hope to earn:  to leave my reader pondering...

You've captured such powerful visuals in this poem Mark ... very much enjoyed the depth within these sentiments, nicely written indeed!

Best wishes,
/Kit

I love the way this snaps into your mind's eye. It is cold but real. A picture to determine its black and whiteness and its shades of grey. Since you spoke of humans and compassion were you expressing our homeless and how they got to be that way?  I felt it was so defying in death as that is something we look away.. at.

Sincerely,
Regina

I envisioned ths as the elderly... treasures hidden beneath their pavillion of gray( their wisdom and experiences)...waiting for their next birthday...wishing only to be closer to their youth.. instead of the obvious...well maybe I am wrong, have been before..

Thank you, Kit...  I'm always trying to reach a little further...

Regina:  Bingo.  Yes, that was my intent, but as I read others' comments, I can see that this poem has different possibilities to it as well.  I didn't understand your last sentence though...?

Hi Connie.  Thanks for stopping by -- haven't see you around for a while...

Wynter -- that's an interesting possibility.  I was picturing an elderly person, but specifically a homeless one.

Sorry Mark...I meant it felt like it was the picture of those that just don't die...they keep living somehow in the squaller and conditions most could not. And we look at them but past them as not to let it really sink in. To look away...at. Hope that makes better sense. It was such a good piece that I went too deep!

Sincerely,
Regina
