On The Inside

The backyard is my world.
It's where I talk with God,
listen to the birds,
feed the squirrels,
smell  the flowers,
revel in the warmth of the sun,
feel the touch of nature's breath.

Mother takes me there,
down the ramp that connects our
imprisoning house with the earth
where fresh life flows into my atrophied body,
heightening my stifled senses,
increasing the beat of my paltry heart
until it drums in my ears.

She places grains on the tray
laying across the arms of my motorized chair,
then walks away;
the squirrels come,
and the birds,
confident in my inability to move.

Overwhelmed with joy I laugh,
though only dribble passes my lips.
I dance round and round
as I've seen other children do in the sun,
and I speak with God from deep within
this crippled shell where my soul resides,
and I listen to mother trying to hold back the tears -
all from  the confines of this chair whose straps
hold me in place.

Mother is my earthly life.
She suffers much more than I,
yet I've never heard her complain
though I know she hurts inside,
and when I hear her cry I wish God
would let me die,
would let me free her of the burden I am,
but first I pray He lets me hug her just one time,
lets me say "I love you mommy",
"I love you, mommy".

The house is dark -
I lay in bed staring at the stars
glowing on the ceiling.
Mother put them there
so I could see heaven any time I wished.
I listen to the quiet breathing of her sleep
in the bed across the room.
"I love you mommy," I whisper deep inside,
where only God can hear,
then close my eyes and count the minutes
until we ride down the ramp
into my backyard world,
again.

Wonderful write that grabbed my heart and won't let go.  I'm sure God is a faithful messenger and that He tells your mother everything good you say/think.  I know He tells her what a good son you are ... a lot like His
