Ocean Waves

Standing alone on the edge
Winds blowing, arms crossed
Tears falling at my feet
It is cold out there
Not a soul nearby

Hours I must have stood
A gull stopped by and stared
Spread its wings flew away somewhere
A terrier sat nearby, wet
Came to my feet
Nosed around, and in one moment
Ran up the beach, beyond the dune
Straight ahead a crab
Within the retreating water
Managed to stop and clean its claws
Then came the wave taking it away
I looked to the right into a slight drizzle
Right behind the beginning of a rainbow
Stretching from the edge of the horizon
Turning slightly to the left
A sea turtle slowly edging to its nest
For a second looked my way
Before resting for another day
I dared turn around
To look behind
I felt something brush my head
I quickly turned a little frightened
Nothing to see but a leaf at my feet
Emerging from a shell within, a butterfly
Startled, opened its wings, flew up to my face
And in a moment I felt at peace
A butterfly, and friends came face to face
I wondered where those closest were.
