Listening to every heart

…Too Comfortable…

so when I feel life
gets a bit miserable,
it doesn’t take much to look
around,

like I did a few days ago
while in a different city,
a divergent neighborhood,

I noted a diverse
approach to what I usually
feel comfortable with,

I walked
a little more guardedly,
still smiling, but
wary,

drove a little slower in
strange avenues, where trees
met sky, finding that
birds and people
were quite normal,

but I did not know them,

even after a day or two
when comfortable sat
back on my lap

it took but a glance to show
me I am still a stranger
in a foreign place,

although in my own state, but
no one knows me

no one cares,

and I get a glimpse of what
it must be like

to be unwelcome

until I need something
then my money is as green as
yours
coins clink as well as
yours,
packages fill my
arms
like yours,

so I hope when I think I am
too comfortable,

that is when I hope you see
me, as you crutch along
or wheel along
or still attempt to see
with your remaining eye

that my smile is only meant
to welcome you

in your own world
so that I can be
your console, and we can
both become too comfortable
for words
