Darken sky scattered, I am
until I hear the first rain tap
like painted nails
typing the cement into pictures.
One is a profile of a man in a hat,
another a dry place,
heart shaped.

The skitty cat darts around,
forgetting this dance of water
that turns her fluff to forlorn
is not a summer sprinkler.

The forest green painted wooden chair
is like a soldier at first light,
steady and straight and facing north.

The back yard is painted now,
and its tongue of dirt is licking
each gift that falls from the brown leaf
supporting the summer’s bitter tomato.

How could I have forgotten the smell
of new rain
or tell how it feathers across me
reminding me of you?

Let me be the scent of rain
on freshly planted soil,
the smile of pride that emerges on a face
after all that toil.

Martie Martie!  Now you know how I love this don't you?  But, of course, I see you smiling!  Enjoyed, hugs, Nancy.

What I wouldnt give to sit in THAT back yard and have girl chat over tea(raspberry)
I feel like I have been there so many times thru your poetry..
the pics youve shared were an added bonus cuz you already painted the images in my mind.

Lovely poem.  I relish the smell of rain on the wind or when it first starts to fall. You have painted a pretty picture here!

I have met my soulmate!!! I thought I was the only one who looked at the dry spots on cement and made pictures of them! How refreshing to know I'm not alone....thanks, Martie!
