As canines, felines so we shed
our epidermis, it's perpetual peel

A major contributor to household dust,
replicating, replacing the same old form.

Silently skinned, near traceless
shavings unlike reptiles who

Leave whole last years coat
and can measure a change

Our seasons ruthless and rootless
overtake the slower moving trees.

Carnivores, tearing forever
the cover off the world

Whose own rind disintegrates
leaving nothing in evidence.

Prometheus justly punished
for bestowing fire on man,

A paradox our lean towards
it's misuse in sacrifice both

Animals and each other ultimately
becoming a weapon of war.

Immolating earth thus stripping
atmospheric cover unleashing the

Fire of Sun on the ephemeral
hides of untrustworthy

Keepers of the flame.

*sigh* now why does this make me feel like I am sitting at the feet of a great philosopher who is sharing the simple mysteries of mankind with me? This poem delighted my mind and fed a need I did not even realise I had until I lost myself in your words. MAGNIFICENT!!!I AM IN AWE OF YOU, SIR.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

A keeper, this, but away from the flame, I believe....

I watched a special tonight on how they teach the young men in a certain faith for martyrdom, with the shroud of death being the last thing they wear in a ritual before they become keepers of the flame as well, becoming "human bombs", etc.  This poem reminds me so much of what I watched.   Excellent write and read, and you left me lots to think about as usual.

So much here. The non erasure of our existence leaving little evidence of our bodily stance...and yet the slow kill of it..and the harsh reality of it when taken so brutally. We are strong and most fragile at the same time. I will ponder this a long time. Your metaphors are running through me like freight trains today.

Sincerely,
Regina

I can't add much to what has already been  posted here..I wonder if...I, too, shall be
leaving nothing in evidence...

Extremely well thought out the way you connect so many forms of shedding coverings to make your excellent point.....very nicely done.

Another one to save and ponder. I've read it once, need to read over again. So much depth and truthfulness in one poem. I will want to revisit this one later in the evening, when it calms down a bit in my household. My  teenager and Jack Russell Terrier are 'active' right now.
