Sonnet to a Cricket

The sun has slipped behind a wooded crest
As colors turn to dusty rose and bronze
The twilight always brings a loveliness
To woods and hills and quiet country ponds

The sounds, the visions, coolness all around
And silent moments, til a cricket’s song
begins to lead an orchestra of sounds
as tree frogs, owls and night birds sing along

Each one repeats his song in noisy chants
These creatures of the night with eerie drone
I contemplate my insignificance
A silent human standing here alone

Among us all, though, only I usurp
Aesthetic pleasure from a cricket’s chirp

You, Liz, write interactive pictures of loveliness....I'll exit now before my envy runneth over and I drool upon the keys!

Liz, you really can write about any topic, can't you?!

What a wonderful sonnet of the many marvels of crickets...yes, their sound is both eerie and peaceful.~

Take care,

In Texas they go "churrrup" which rhymes with stirrup which is what you need when you want to ride one ... a cricket that is

Well done and a wonderful read!

Liz,
My cricket chrips too much when I am trying to sleep...could that be cause mine is inside the house?  Here is AZ it's too hot for them little critters outside so they move in!  I love you little tribute to them!

I've never read a cricket sonnet before...you are so original! It's so well written, I could almost hear them outside at even 26F last night. I like this poem even more than those delightful little chirpers.

the last calling of the cricket
before the snow falls white
sings slower, a little lower
and lullabies me through the night...

"I contimplate my own significance" That is the line that caught my admiration the most.  A very scenic poem which has wonderful imagery to the reader.

My dear, sweet Liz - If you shared my bedroom, the sounds of the crickets would not be so soothing, methinks, as there seems to be a whole bunch of them some nights!  On other nights, they stay hidden from my can of bug spray.  Perhaps I need a cat to rid me of them, but what would I do then?  Get a dog?  lol

I always love your writing.

Lovely poem Elizabeth. Little crickets have a way of singing us to sleep in a sweet lullaby. I can remember as a child, when we would go camping, listing to them many a night.

I loved all of your comments to my cricket sonnet. Thank you all so much for injecting your sentiments of these creatures. Seema like Balladeer and Lngjohn are finally in agreement on something. Both would eliminate the little pests..Great to see you guys together on something this important
