Secrets

A bitter secret hidden from a child’s tender ears
Buried in a vault within the heart for many years
Protecting him from sorrow that can never be revealed
Is passed on to your children, though the secret tightly sealed

For the silence of the spirit is felt among the young
Without understanding why, they feel the pain of silent tongue
And though the truth be harbored for the rest of all your days
It somehow is inherited in very subtle ways

The one who lives in shadows of a burden that’s unknown
After seeds of inner sorrow have from childhood been sown
In the hour of their need, have no counsel in their life
For they know the ear can’t listen when the heart is full of strife

So they suffer in their silence, just as those that came before
And never dare to knock upon the closed and silent door
The phantoms of the secret past can only cause more pain
Covering a past disgrace, an exercise in vain

Although honesty is the best policy ... I guess there are some things people can't bring themselves to reveal ... I can only imagine their sorrow

Liz,
Thank you for this...makes me think a little bit about my own children and how honesty needs to come with ease...this is lovely!

So many lived this, and this is a keeper for me!  Children ask because they want an answer, and an answer of truth can always be given that satify their question that they respect.  I truly think they learn what they are shown, (and I detest secrets) from children, as they are just "smaller people".  A good way to learn what to do and not to do, is watch a child's face, when a grownup answers their question, they have great body language.  Can you tell the hurt secrets leave behind, I could write a book on here about them.  Thank you for writing this for the "little people" Liz.

...somehow, somehow, you can always see it in their eyes....

You've touched many, Elizabeth...may you always do so....
