No one ever said
"When I grow up, I want to be"
Full of dispair and desperation
Unless I have some of these

Then comes humiliation
From the depths we must sink
Degradation from the thoughts
We have learned how to think

When weve lost all humanism
Running only on base instinct
Then were stuck in defeatism
All is gone, do more so we can't think

I know this all sounds crazy
And it's much worse then this write seems
For when we were all children
We too were full of dreams

No I don't think any child said
When I grow up I'll be a hype
Or a crack head on the corner
Selling my body for the pipe

Zinsser, you speak volumes of wisdom in this write, and no, I don't believe a child does anymore than they are taught!  Great write.

Strong message and write, Connie.  Puts things into perspective, for a moment...  One of the most fascinating and accurate lyrics I've ever come across are from David Byrne:  "You may find yourself..."  Remember that song from the 80's?  (I forget the title -- something like "Water Flowing Underground"...?)  Just makes me do just that:  "Lord, how did I get here?"

yep, well said, we don't aspire to pain, loss, failure, so we must, MUST keep dreaming

the title of your poem has be contemplating a poem that will expound on "When I grow up, I'll be old.." as always, I wonder where that perspective will take me...in a poem, that is.
