In New York
with three dear friends
not so long ago
gray clouds wrapped me around
through a wave-lapping wind
and I thought
those twin towers look like
giant lego blocks - they
are malformed, and cold.

Now, safely far away,
I understand
the thousands who once breathed
inside, who went home to
children and the embrace of
freedom and spouses, forming the hub
of that peerless New York
energy

were the warmth.

The life was inside the walls,
and not the facade.

That life is still inside, murdered
beneath the rubble of a symbol
and now as I stare at my two photos
of those lego blocks
I wish to God I could build them again
with my bare heart.

~with sorrow~ K

Kamla~
Thanks.
These are trying times and it's good to have the compassionate support of friends around the globe.

Denise was just talking to me today about the trip
the four of you made there.

This is a truly beautiful piece. I think at this time everyone wants to be able to do something as productive as rebuild or wish for a brighter outcome than is possible.
However, the best wishes and intentions are sometimes all we can offer and the best things we can.

I liked this piece for the honesty in it.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

The cold-warmth element works well in this poem, giving it a simple core that is neatly observed.

I'm so glad that you had a chance to see New York City for yourself, K... and I'm really, really glad that you coerced me into meeting you there... I really am...

I like your poem, my dear friend..

Marge-y...hello my friend. You know, you do have my support - and NZ's in fact...but this for me goes beyond support. I have had a deeply personal reaction to this tragedy. It has haunted my every waking moment - I see images all the time. Many other things seem insignificant. And I am so ashamed I ever thought those things looked like lego blocks...I feel like I cheapened the life within. This poem was a carthasis, in part...thanks for your kind response...

AF...thank you  - and I agree. Your words were simply, but astutely put.

Bilby - well, I didn't write this for its technicality...thank you for the observation though.

Nan - ok ok ok - enough of the coercion tale! I DID NOT coerce - I begged, you caved. Heh. And it's so odd hearing port authority on the tv now...so very odd. Love you too my friend...(hey - I'm glad you like this freeverse poem lol)

Very touching.. oh to "rebuild them with our bare hearts"  I have never been to New York, and the twin towers now in person I will never see, ..but the hearts of New Yorkers I have heard.. and they are true Americans..our sister and brothers. Proud to be an American.

Nations are always it's people and their character. Buildings are things and taken alone are indeed a matter of beauty in the eye of the beholder. You've recognized what's important here and we appreciate your fine verse. Thank you friend.

again, I'm reminded of the time that I spent inside the mighty twin towers. . . from there, I felt that I could see the world. . .

I see now, that in a way. . . I am. . .

thank you again my friend. . .

I was looking at my photos yesterday from our trip not so long ago and had similar thoughts, visualizing the people inside, wishing I could warn them, wishing I could turn back time. Very powerful poem, Kamla.

Wonderful words.
Sad how some realizations come too late, but heartening that we can come to these realizations  at all.
Enjoyed this one lots!

Lovely poem severn, a pity that it had to be formed in such terrible circumstances.
It is ironic isn't it that such a terrible accident could give genesis to strong and wonderful things - determination, hope, altruism and sacrifice.
You're right, the world trade centre isn't just a monolithic bastion of stone and steel, but rather it was the heart of the people of America, and it joins the ranks of the lost wonders of the world (along with the colossus, pink and white terraces and the statues of buddha).
Lovely poem - let's see what other wonderful things we can divine from this calamity
