She climbs onto the bus
Not angry, just sad.
One look at her tells me
Her day had been bad.

What should I say?
What should I do?
Make eye contact?
Or just look away?

I might say "I'm sorry,
You seem to be blue"
But maybe it's best
To grant her solitude.

Or maybe reach out with a smile or two?
What should I do?
Suggestions are welcome
If you've walked in these shoes.

If I flash her a smile,
Will she respond with a snap?
A feeble thank you?
Or a visual slap?

Sitting quietly there for over a mile
With locks on her mind,
The physical body close by,
But with a heart far apart.

The she quietly steps off
And walks slowly home
And my heart reaches out
For she looks so alone.

So I step off the bus
And shout gently to her
"I'll see you tomorrow?"
Just to show her I care.

And I go home that night
To my own precious child
And suddenly I remember
it is Friday.

Midnitesum--

It is hard to know sometimes...where another's boundries are.  Your heart was certainly in the right place, and I liked the way you ended this, with your own child.

every thing Martie said, yes!

you are an observant person with a full heart

how does one befriend a stranger? ah, me
pray for more opportunity?

Thanks for reading and for you thoughtful replies. I just began a part-time job as a school bus monitor, and this type of encounter happens daily. I hope my response will always be a fitting one for each individual soul.

If you always follow your heart, you can never go wrong in what you say. I too was one of the lonely ones and for someone to say I'll see you tomorrow brightened my day, for I knew that if no one else acknowledged me, I had one person looking forward to seeing me.

This was wonderfully written.  A good heart can be hard to find but you seem to have just that. To let someone know how much you care can be such a great comfort so I think you should let them know.  Take care....Sue

Thank you all for reading.
Dawn: I'm glad you post at this board, where you'll never be a lonely one again.
Trina: Thanks. Just coming home each day knowing I helped deliver those kids home safely makes my day a joyful one, and because my own teenager is always here safely.
Suetang: Thank you so much for reading, and for you kind comments.
Faterider: Yes, I hope to give her a copy someday soon. Every week they will put me on a different bus, so that lots of drivers and students will see me on the bus. And I say hello and goodbye to almost all of them each day, whether or not they behaved well on the bus. There are so many lonely ones out there, and at this age they really do need an extra smile and the I NOTICE YOU/I CARE treatment.
