Light

He captures memories on canvas,
oil and tint brought to life -
brushstrokes lovingly layered
in the owl-light.

The easel is angled to fetch dying light,
fescue and bluegrass tickle his bare ankles,
evening’s dew hastens his hand,
yet stirs with night’s magical promise.

The surrounding landscape
is not the countryside he paints -
Southern Appalachians against
light imbued sky backdrops
and cooling streams,
but a flat, hot terrain
with more folk than trees.

I watch from a distance,
will myself to draw closer.
To become his mountains,
to be the woods he creates
is to know light.

Reminds me of my brother when
he paints the landscapes
of north Georgia.

Well done, Core.

Hi Corinne,

A gorgeous poem. I like the way you approach the painter in stages, first from a distance and then moving closer to where you want to absorb yourself in his light. Your comparative imagery in this verse works parallels the theme effectivley.

thanks for the read,
Wendy

Very nicely done, I enjoyed.

Throw your heart out in front of you
And run out to catch it.
