Lighthouse Haunt
~*Marge Tindal*~

Yaquina Bay Light, built 1871
barely open three years, then it's purpose was done
Decommissioned in 1874,
the beaconing light was to shine no more
As a new one was built just a short distance away
Yaquina Head Light would now show the way

From out across the open sea,
a sloop came sailing to shore at the Newport swells
Captain asking for accommodations to board his daughter
for a fortnight, as she did not fare the sea so well

Teen lovely, Muriel Trevenard bid her father farewell
setting up chaperoned residence at a local hotel
Fell in great favor with others around
found friends with quick abound

An afternoon outing to the abandoned lighthouse
as the teens were just naturally of a curious sort
In the explore Muriel seemed withdrawn
dropped her lace hanky before they left for home

Exclaimed to her smitten companion, Harold Welch,
"I must go back to find it by myself."
The group was headed home, when stopped with a scream
Immediate search for Muriel, she was nowhere to be seen

A pool of blood, a lace hanky - that's all
found mysteriously abandoned in the lighthouse hall
No other trace of her was ever uncovered
It's said the place is still haunted with screams of no other

The sloop bearing her father did not return
Of his daughter's fate, never did he learn
Should you happen to venture to the Oregon shore
The ghost of Muriel Trevenard may haunt you forevermore

*This story poem is as accurate as I could write it
based on the historical records of that time period.
Lischen M. Miller wrote a 'fictional' story entitled The Haunted Lighthouse
It was published in the Pacific Monthly, Vol. 11, 1899
Stories of the lighthouse being haunted have persisted for over a century.
Truth or fiction ?  You decide.
The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was remodeled and opened in 1996.

*A special thanks to Trillium/Betty Lou Hebert
for turning me on to the search for this lighthouse history~

Wow! Great intriguing story. Such a horrible tragic thing, in an architecturally beautiful place. My boss and I were discussing Ghosts at work yesterday! Seems her Mother was visited and gave her such a scare, she was hospitalized! A ball of light/fire floated thru her home and hovered over her Father in his sleep and then left the room and hovered over his Mother in her sleep. Left the house thru the front door leaving the porch swing rocking like a swift wind had rushed through. Truth or fiction, don't have a clue. But something's being seen and heard or felt. Too many accounts around the world. I was chill bumped all day about it. The unexplained will someday have an explaination I hope.
Sincerely,
Regina

Wow, never been to Oregon, but maybe one day I will. I'll be sure and check out the lighthouse if I go there some day.
Beautiful haunting story.

Good for you!

Thank you Betty!

Personally, I so enjoy poetry that has included research, for having done some myself, it is not always easy to get all of the facts put down in such a skillful way! BUT...never fear, the pen of Marge is near, and so glad I am of it!

Thank you for this!

Marge:  Kudos to you!  Great job and beautifully presented.  When we were exchanging e-mails, I forgot to tell you that Muriel's lace and blood-stained handkerchief is on display under glass, in the lighthouse. I stood looking at it for some time thinking about the story, which you have vividly brought to life.  Thanks.

Thank you so much for your input.
Never met a spirit that caused me fear~
but .. have heard of it happening to some.
Usually we 'fear' that which we aren't willing to accept~
I accept all possibilities~

I've never had the pleasure of being there either,
but sure was intrigued by the lighthouses there.

Shiver and chills...I have printed this to add to my library for I have a love of ghost stories and a passion for lighthouses.  This will now be on my list of lighthouses to visit...Thank you for leading me there!

Let my words fall first upon deaf ears before a closed mind...

Thank you so much.
I think there is 'truth' to the legend also.
