Old Worthless Photographs This is your life, your ancestry The ones who bravely came And carried to America Your family’s given name This lady of a century past In pinafore of lace Has your smile cast within The shadows of her face Her eyes and mouth resemble yours Her laughter and her tears Have been recorded in your voice To last a hundred years Old photographs long overlooked The binding thread of kin That weaves among these pages Truly stirs the soul within Don’t throw away your history Don’t ever bury roots For they have given nourishment And you have been the fruits They handed down a heritage Of priciples and truth That you have harbored in the heart And spirit of your youth Some things you do by nature Without ever knowing why These are the lifelines of the past Inscribed within your eye Some day your portrait will remain A symbol for a child Who’ll recognise her beauty In the shadow of your smile Elizabeth Santos |

This is such a beautiful poem, Elizabeth.. "Old photographs long overlooked The binding thread of kin That weaves among these pages Truly stirs the soul within" I loved that stanza. As LIW said... lots o truth is spoken behind these words. Wonderful post... I REALLY liked this. I hope I get to read more in this forum from you, soon! Such a talented poet.. --Marie If going to church makes you a Christian, then sitting in a garage makes you a car. |

Lady in White, Thank you for rescuing this poem from sliding into oblivion. And thanks for your comments. Your words always mean so much to me LIW. Marie, I don't think I'm supposed to be posting in the teen forum, but I think this poem is relevant to young people who may never think to examine the contents of an attic. That is one of the most magical places to spend an afternoon and you would be surprised what you can learn about yourself! Thanks for reading and commenting Liz |

It's okay, Elizabeth.. you're always welcome in Teen! I really love that idea... Some day, when I have nothing to do, I might just do that... go on a search of all the different memoirs in the attic.. great idea! Like I said, I really liked this poem. A wonderful message.. Thanks for sharing! I think many of us in Teen might find this to be useful. Thanks --Marie If going to church makes you a Christian, then sitting in a garage makes you a car. |

lovely Elizabeth! I wish I had an attic. SIgh, maybe one day I'll have a big house with one and my grandkids will go searching through our family history, as I am the keeper of all things old and handed down |

Egads! I don't think I have any old mementos of my ancestery. I'd go search in the attic, but I'm scared (spiders!! ) But yeah, this poem so speaks the truth in such a good way. Great job. "and Death i think is no paranthesis"-e.e. cummings |

You're very right, Elizabeth- I'm so glad you shared this w/ us. Teens need a better sense of pride in their heritage. It's a VERY interesting thing to look back on. I, myself, love hearing about my late relatives and even sitting and listening to my Grandaddy's stories on how "When he was a kid..." I'm adding this to my library. I really enjoyed this. Such a wonderful message filled with so much truth. Wow! You wouldn't worry about what people thought about you if you knew how seldom they did.
