The lollipop lady of Bellingham Square
Was found hanged in her garden today
They said no one knew just how long she'd been there
Cause of death is too early to say

She spent all her days in a wandering haze
Handing sweets to the kiddies in town
You could tell from her face she'd seen better days
No one knew what had brought her down

As the gruesome news flashed all over the place
neighbors stood in the streets just to stare
Hoping for glimpses of her sad stricken face
And a tidbit of gossip to share

She handed out treats to all those who would smile
As she walked round the town every day
Always dressed like a dowd in yesterday's style
She perfected the 'crazy' sashay.

Some men cleaned her house and then shut it up tight
She was buried her without any prayer
So it's left up to me to sing the sad plight
Of the lollipop lady of Bellingham Square

Too, too often we see such, without taking a moment to smile, recognize, let alone touch. We of the words flowing so fast, how is it we share none, with so many people pass.

Excellent point

I'm from a small town and I think very one has someone like this......a different approach to life's cares with a sadness that is distant and not easily accessible. I commend you on the compassion displayed in this piece as you once again see through the eyes of a poet.......
Sing that song straight from the bottom of your heart and make sure it reaches the stars where the angels listen!

Take care and keep your pen in hand.

This is actually written from a story I saw on an English 'news' site. The title "Lollipop Lady found hanged" got to me.. and I wrote this...

Brava!!
How tender to have a memorial to someone
who was wandering life alone, wanting
only a smile...having to purchase one.
Her life will now be written in the pages
of who we are...

It takes so little to give someone the dignity they deserve, and you said so much about her in such a short poem.  A wonderful "story" or "tribute" either way this was excellent.

PoetdeVine~
The lilting title alone was worth the read.
The story ... touching.

Lollipop Lady’s Domain

The old wood stove was cold to touch,
Broken furniture forms a pile of wood,
Some of it remains intact, but not much.
The stool for sitting last standing upon,
Now tipped into the scattered sugar bags,
Dozens of empties, sweetness all is gone.

On the floor collected bits of paper,
Clippings from years gone by and days long done,
Children’s pictures all windows do cover,
Letting in a bit of light, but not much.
Twisted paper sticks in the mold prepared,
Waiting for the hot sweet liquid to touch.

In a frame on the wall is a picture
Of a happier time it does capture.

Gloom
Hope you don't mind,
thought I write a sort of sequel.
Just a look into the place she was
to find out a little more of whom she was.
