Nkosi
1989 - 2001

a quiet life
lived in pain
loss to the world
Heaven's gain

with words spoken
finding pride
stepping forth
nothing to hide

advocate of
unpopular fight
so young to die
for such a right

lessons taught
if only learned
by love and hope are the
Heavens earned

mourn him not
no life in vain
Loss to the world
Heaven's gain

I just saw something on him last night on Nightline. . . just totally amazing. . . we should all be so happy in the face of what life can throw at us. . .

I think that you've captured him here very well deVine. . .

PoetdeVine~

You touched me with this render,
as Nkosi Johnson touched the lives of many
with a prophetic gentleness far beyond his eleven years.

Thank you sooooooo much for this tender piece.

Poet Divine.  How well written your poem about him.  We cannot help but mourn when one so young and valuable leaves, but God knows our pain.  Joyce

I'm with Severn...in the dark about Nkosi.  He must have touched those in the know deeply.

The poem is absolutely wonderful, PoetdeVine

A child so young to have suffered much. A beautiful tribute to be etched in time. Admired by many, spokesperson for a cause- sadden by the news, momentary prayer.

Life is to short to not appreciate all of nature's gifts. As I sit & ponder in awe - quietly.

Nkosi was born on February 4, 1989 in South Africa, with HIV. His mother was also infected and he was taken in as a foster child when he was two. He fought the system to allow him to be able to go to school with the other kids and he became a spokesperson for safe sex and AIDS testing. He was the longest living AIDS child. About 200 HIV-positive children are born in South Africa each day, but most die before they reach school age.

Sharon, beautifully written poem. and no he did not die in vain, it is time that we were all educated and in some ways I think his death will help highlight the problems of Africa we were all too quick to forget.

He lived not in vain, and you did his life proud with this piece.

All said above so true and I want to mention the wonderful title as well. The children are the true angels. You are right about not mourning him. He must have even more important work to do now.

my only goal
is just to "be"
