Am I a Poet?

by Michael

If I am a
poet,
then I am
window glass.

You are able to
peer inside
and see what in me lives.

So often I've seen
imagery
camouflage a poet's feelings.
Though not purposely done,
done all the same.

I've seen the same
occur with my own writing.

It causes me to ask,
am I a poet?

The day is overcast,
threatening rain.
I hear a muffled thump, thump, thump
in the distance,
as someone hurriedly repairs a house
before the skies release
their moisture.

My lawn is a mixture of
grass and assorted weeds,
short,
though trying to grow
in this still
chilly month.

Thousands of tiny flowers
erupt each year
at this time.
About the size of a
woman's smallest fingernail,
they are a deep lavendar with sun-gold trim
around the edges of the petals.

Quite lovely for a weed.

A Brown Thrasher hops about,
exploring the lawn in search of food,
ever alert.
First one bird, then three.

I go and refill their feeders.

Beside the window, I place
my easel
and try to put on
canvas,
not only this scene,
but how this day makes me
feel.

As I touch the canvas
and recognize its familiar spring against my brush,
I wonder.

Am I a poet,
or just an
image maker?

You're a poet and don't even know it!! ;->
Very good question to ponder, Michael...  I think that as long as you have a motive of expression, then how you choose to express it is up to you -- poet is, afterall, a label at the core of its description...  isn't everything in life a description?  Image-maker or author, do you stir others to FEEL from what you are "imaging"?  THAT'S what counts, at the end of the day.  Nice work.

Yes, you are both, and do both so eloquently, I might add

Michael, I adore this, there's much to ponder here, simple and complex, it's a keeper for sure for this poet amateur!

Take care,
Melissa~

You, Michael, are a poet.  And a fine one, my friend.

Michael...You are a wonderful poet and artist...and also a good friend.  We all see things so differently...to share with words or paint, is to share...and that's a good thing.  Hugs!

Well Michael, I came in here already answering your question in my mind before I read the words ... and after reading, it only serves to emphasize a resounding ... "Yes! You are a poet!"   You've also given me a stirring want to pick up my paintbrush again ... it's been far too long since I've stretched a canvas. Ahhh ... to feel that "spring in the brush" ... thank you for the inspiration!

Best wishes,
/Kit

you meld your days with mine,
in deep inspire
while I search about in wallow
of what to say that
would most touch
a heart...

and wonder...

am I a poet?

then...

does it matter?

~*~

It matters first that you are indeed, a poet, that your images are glass, sometimes clear, sometimes opaque, sometimes....crystal...

and it matters more that you transform others with this gift, and your other gifts, as you wend them so well throughout your words....

yes, Sir...you are most certainly,

a Poet.

Mark,
Thank you for the kind words and very well express, I might add.

Melissa,
I am also an amateur.  I'm not sure what a professional is, but it seems that to be so might take some of the fun out of writing.  Thank you.

Lone Wolf,
Thank you for the nice compliment.

Sven,
Yes, same idea.  I can often paint what I cannot write and sometimes write what I cannot paint.  Thank you, my friend.

Gentle Spirit,
Thank you and hugs to you also.

Sue,
Thanks, sweetie.  I'm glad you liked this one.

Deer,
Yes, true.  However, what I was trying to say in this is that we often use so much imagery that our message is obscured.  Unfortunately, I obscured my own in this poem.  Thanks.

Lisa,
Thank you very much.

inot2B,
Yes, weeds do make pretty flowers, don't they?     Thank you.

Martie,
Yes, sharing is always a good thing.  Thank you, my friend.

walker,
You're very sweet.  Thank you.

Kit,
You're most welcome and I do hope you pick your brush back up.  Painting gives me so much pleasure.  I just bought a 24 X 36 inch stretched canvas and plan do paint an ocean scene on it with a sinking Spanish Galleon.  It ought to be a lot of fun. Thank you.

Interloper,
And yes you are.    Thanks

Lady In White,
You always say such nice things.  I much enjoy your posts on my work.  Thank you.
