Scenes From the Bank
Virginia Salter

feeding frenzy nearly done
quick, quack
hawnk, hawnk
quick, quack, quick, quack, quack
rippled vee glides water
disappears as mallard takes flight

huge splash twenty feet from shore
evidence fleeting rapidly
eliminating the knowing of its maker
lone adolescent duckling swims close
nerves stand all my hairs to attention
what may be lurking neath plumed morsel

feathered foul rest
chatter breaks out mid social corners
yet most satisfied
not for quantity of gift
but, acquiescent all is gone

one drake two yards from my feet
snores his peace
as knobby headed goose yonder
crooks his white neck to his chest in quiet rest

soft brown lady commences stroll
vocalizing her desire to pass
uprooting all in her path

new drake rises, follows
disturbing, anew, each circle of friends
three, four, five more
join the throng seeming fully enraptured by lady’s beauty

ahhhhh, what fancy may linger within the minds of her suitors
seven begin their promenade of the pond
black and white entourage
surrounds Lady Brown
camouflaging her presence

WAIT! no, she’s left the group
enjoying seclusion with the lead suitor
off in the distance
near the far shore

as the entourage entertains
Lady White in the ripples of the pond
so fickle they be
in their pursuit of happiness

Smiling here...there's a pond near my home and it's one of my favorite things to do--especially in Spring when the babies are swimming too! Thanks for the smile.

Hey, VAS, this was fun, especially after I read a few lines and figured out that it wasn't about a hold-up!  hehehe.  Go ducks!
