Listening to every heart

Reassembling Reflections

Heinz 57 of generations,
a good mix of him
and her
and their combined
DNA

at least, on the outside
her great green eyes
his considerable ears
almost all his nose
sometimes I see her hands
with his strength
thank goodness they
both had big smiles

I would not have chosen
one over the other for that

but in the overall of the inner me,
the divisions do not come as clearly
and I think there is more of he
in me
that way

he would see the best in all
and give room for fault
live and let live
guided by his own beliefs
never inflicting them on another

she perhaps more discerning
not as easy to trust,
truly a mother’s instinct
don’t attack her children
or take them away too soon
from the nest

Dad had looked “him” up and down
probably should not have kept
all thoughts to himself
Mom resolved to say OK
but quit talking when plans turned
to leaving the state, let alone
leaving home

when the wedding was concluded…

before then, I had to win Mom
over because I believed dad believed
in my beliefs…

we were wrong…

Mom was right…

she never held it over our heads,
that knowledge

they are gone now, and no one
can stand and look at them
and look at me and say
“you resemble…”

it’s up to me to pull that knowledge
out
even when painful

even when I know
Mom would have been right
when I did “it” with Dad’s heart….

so I relish the times
when Dad’s heart wins…..

Two things get to me, one, that Dad wins, I identify with that one, grin..the second, the green eyes...so illuminating...gentle smile

I look in the mirror sometimes and I see my mother looking back at me, her proud Cherokee features so prominent.  I would've liked to have met your father.  I somehow feel that he and I would have gotten along very well.

I love these little glimpses into your family life.
They are so well written. You could string them into a novel.
You are very gifted and a prolific writer
