Paperbagged

perhaps it is just
because I am hungry

for something

but a recall came on my
drive to work

of a state, long ago
a town,
the commute
having only earlier-hour’s
coffee sloshing
inside

arriving at the bank,
heels clicking in 1982 time
and that smell

reaching across the tiles
of toasted bread

in a bank!  my hunger pangs
pinging my stomach’s walls
and I went to look,
as coffee grounds brewed and
associated with

the toasty smell, yes, it was a
cool summer morn,
just like today

is that what beckoned the recall?

but….here she was, a veritable ancient
of wrinkle and wiry hands,
a multi caverned toaster at her side,
slabs and slabs of wonderful yellow cheese
waiting for the warm toast,
buttered within both sides with a broom
of a brush

then enveloping the cheddar so
warmly

the thin hands would
quickly wrap the warm in opaque paper
then stuff into a brown
paper sack to remain
warm, which slowly caused the cheese
to open its senses,
in preparation of the descent between
lips and teeth…waiting to release
buttery flavors and
cheesy gold

so it became
my treat

to get there a little earlier then,
in the mornings
for the hottest of brews
and the best
toasted cheese tidbits
still tasting, these
many years gone,
the gold of butter
enveloping my tongue
and the tang
of cheddar
between my teeth

it’s a good thing memories are fat-free….

Don't discuss yourself, you are bound to lose; if you belittle yourself, you are believed; if you praise yourself, you are disbelieved. Michel de Mont

One for the library to save for when I am not so full. Never knew lunch could be so poetic.

You know it's a good write when you can actually smell the fragrance, and the belly begins rumbling.  Look and see the effect you caused...Hunger for us all and a job well done!

Let my words fall first upon deaf ears before a closed mind...
