I was asked on the morn
of the first day of the longest night
was it simply the hope
that surges
that bites
was it the coarse wool
with which i hide my eyes

A fair question 'twas says I
As fair as the maiden
in the sowin' room
in the storms eye

I was asked for a second
On the day i took my bride
I was lost within her eyes
For her beauty
was a memory
were men do long long to die

Still 'tis a fair question
this still says I
As I sit now in the moon shine
were all must eventual lie

Thrice was i asked in the noon
of my life
at my coranation
At my expulsion
Then at my funeral Pyre
And an answer would not come

Still the question is fair
But my mind cannot bear
I sit upon this cloud
stare out at an anxious crowd
yet remain mute as a clouds cry

The very deep did rot: O Christ!
That ever this should be!
Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs
Upon the slimy sea.

I do enjoy the riddling of this, though I am left without the question,

somehow feeling as if the answer resides within....

so, fate has pulled the wool over your eyes ... or was it hope?

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write. Philip Sidney (1554-1586) Loving in Truth

Enjoyed the riddle in this, much to ponder. LOved the poem Walter.
