state of confusion

Paul Brown

I remember Paul
as an easy going daydreamer,
in every way
a photographic negative of me.
We were kid magnets,
polarized,
yet drawn together.
That he was a boy
made no difference.
Paul was my first best friend.

Summers, we’d run lawn-to-lawn
to enlist draftees for war games
or dig swimming holes,
playing pretend well into darkness,
two silhouettes
hiding
from mothers’ piercing calls
to come on home.

Families gathered in final farewell.
I was too young to understand,
watching the small, white coffin
descend
from top of grassy mound
into cavity of decay,
I kept waiting for Paul.

Oh, Corinne~
Touching tears of sad understanding here ...
A beautifully written piece to Paul's memory
from youthful recall.

Oh this one hurts.  Sometimes it's almost better we don't understand I think.  Well done.

This is a lovely tribute to beautiful memories of chiildhood.  Better you didn't understand the ending too well.  Very well done. Joyce
